Which Chocolate Milk Has The Most Protein

Whey Protein Vs Chocolate Milk

A high-protein chocolate milk drink claims to better help athletes recover

I have recently got into a pretty heated debate with a student from my colleges exercise science program. He claims that according to his programs main professor, whey protein is a total waste of money and can be easily replaced by chocolate milk. He claims that although milk contains little protein the amino acid content offers more advantages than whey. I say this is total crap, as many conflicting opinions as there are in the field of nutrition and exercise whey protein is as close to a fully accepted thing as I have ever seen, nearly everyone says it is the most important part of gaining quality mass. I know aminos are important but I also supplement with them. Anyone know if there is any truth to these claims about chocolate milk?

However, TruMoo didn’t woo us. The chocolate flavor wasn’t as pronounced as we’d hoped for, and we wished our palates were met with stronger cocoa notes.

Is Chocolate Milk Better Than White Milk

While chocolate milk has more grams of carbohydrates per serving than white milk, both offer the same nine essential nutrients, and either one can be an excellent choice post-workout. Milk, both white and chocolate, contains two types of high-quality protein whey and casein which aid in muscle recovery and repair.

How Much Protein Is In A Cup Of Milk

    • Article

Milk is a good , with 8 grams in a cupor about 1 gram of protein per ounce.

This is true whether you choose fat-free, low-fat, lactose-free or whole milk. Each contain high-quality protein, which means they provide all the essential amino acids your body cant make on its own.

Milk contains two types of protein: casein and whey. Both occur naturally in milk, and the powder form of whey can be mixed in with other foods to boost protein content.

Whey is considered a fast protein because it is digested faster so it releases amino acids to the muscle more quickly than casein does. That might be why so many athletes choose chocolate milk as a recovery drink!

Casein has its place too, however. Some scientists think taking it before bed helps maximize the repair and rebuilding of our muscles as we sleep, because it is digested slower and releases amino acids at a slower rate over time than whey.

No matter when you have it, protein helps bodies rebuild and maintain tissues like those in our muscular and nervous systems. When we get enough protein throughout the day, we likely dont need to rely much on our bodys stores.

Research shows getting 10 to 15 grams of essential amino acids per meal, including 2 to 3 grams of leucine, which is also found in milk, can help rebuild muscle.

What I Do With My Kids

When I plan food and meals, I lead with nutrients in mind. I look for the foods that will fulfill the nutritional requirements of my kids.

I know that without milk and dairy products, my kiddos are unlikely to get what they need, especially for calcium and vitamin D.

I aim for 3 servings of milk or dairy per day. I used to not purchase it for my home when my children were younger.

Then, if they chose to have it at school, that was fine with me, as that was the only place they were getting it.

Now I buy it for my young athletes.

I am careful not to vilify or eliminate flavored milk. I find ways we can work it in reasonably. I treat it just as I would the birthday cakes, the Thanksgiving pie, and the fun food my children eat.

As I see it, making flavored milk the bad guy gets us stuck in the muck, and it becomes difficult to classify and navigate the other foods in our less than perfect diets.

But of course, I like nearly all foods, and want my kids to be open-minded and like them also.

Muscle Milk Chocolate Protein Nutrition Shake 17 Oz ...

What’s often overlooked in our post-workout recovery equation is carbohydrates. Working out also depletes your body’s glycogen, which is essentially stored energy. Eating carbs replenishes glycogen, and also helps cell maintenance and repair.

So, an optimal post-workout recovery drink would have a good mixture of both carbs and protein, with some electrolytes thrown in. Electrolytes are minerals like calcium, sodium and potassium that keep you hydrated and help balance your body’s pH.

Drinking Too Much And Too Many Calories

It is true with anything we eattoo much is too much. And I mean calories. This goes for flavored milk, also.

Too much of a good thing can be bad for your child. Think about too much fruit and the resulting trips to the bathroom.

Chocolate milk can be part of a healthy and satisfying diet as long as you keep the quantities consumed in check.

Aim for three servings of dairy per day, on average, and be mindful of the portion size and how often you offer it. Dairy can be yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, milk or other dairy product.

Its not a good idea to offer three servings of chocolate milk, so make sure you rotate foods in this category.

Last, be conscious of the recommendations for sugar .

Potential Health Benefits Of Chocolate Milk

The protein, calcium, and vitamin D in chocolate milk, as well as other minerals and electrolytes, provide important nutritional benefits.

Bone health. Milk is naturally rich in calcium, an essential nutrient for your bones and teeth. In addition, most of the milk available in the U.S. and many other countries is fortified with vitamin D. This combination of nutrients makes milk a bone-health powerhouse.

U.S. dairy producers began adding vitamin D to milk in the 1930s to help eliminate rickets, a bone-weakening disease. Rickets, which at the time was common in children, is caused by vitamin D deficiency and makes bones softer and weaker than they should be.

In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, a softening of the bones that increases the risk of fractures. Both diseases can be prevented by eating foods high in vitamin D and thats where milk, including chocolate milk, comes in.

Muscle mass and endurance. Chocolate milk is rich in protein, which helps build muscle mass. Several studies have also found that drinking chocolate milk significantly increases endurance, which helps you keep exercising longer.

As a result, chocolate milk can help you build muscle mass directly, by providing protein, and indirectly, by enabling you to exercise longer. Some evidence also suggests that it may be even more effective than sports drinks for increasing endurance and reducing post-workout exhaustion.

Chocolate Milk Brands Ranked From Worst To Best

If you adore chocolate milk, you have Jamaicans to thank. Locals on the island were making a similar drink in the 1400s, and a man named Sir Hans Sloane returned to Europe from Jamaica in the 1700s with cocoa, milk, and the knowledge of how to mix the two ingredients. It didn’t take long for chocolate milk to rise to prominence. These days, you can go to your local grocery store and find a number of different brands in the dairy section.

While most chocolate milk looks the same, the taste and consistency can vary widely. If you select the right brand, your taste buds will thank you as you celebrate this drink’s rich, chocolatey goodness. However, if you choose poorly, the disappointment you feel could ruin your entire day.

Don’t leave your future up to chance. In this ranking, we’ve listed chocolate milk brands, beginning with the brands that deserve to be at the bottom of the barrel.

Chocolate milk has long been touted as the ideal recovery drink. The combination of fluid, protein and carbohydrate is just what your body needs to refuel post run while its calcium and vitamin D supports bone health. A study from Southern Connecticut State University compared the performance of runners who refuelled using either chocolate milk or a carbohydrate-only drink over two separate trials. Results showed that both drinks effectively replenished muscle glycogen but those who drank chocolate milk also had markers of increased muscle synthesis indicating better recovery. To prove the point, in the second trial, individuals who drank the chocolate milk lasted significantly longer in the endurance test.

But not all chocolate milks are created equal. Different products can offer varying benefits for runners so choose one that meets your needs.
