It may look like your favorite of high protein snacks, GORP in a bar, but what you’re really eating when you chomp down on this Nature Valley bar is more fillers than whole foods. Bars can be a convenient way to help get enough protein as a vegan, but after trying a few pretty gross vegan protein bars, I set out to find the best ones.

I was hoping to find at least one that had a solid amount of protein, was low in sugar, tasted good, and didnt cost too much.

So I spent about 2 months collecting and testing vegan protein bars that had good reviews or were recommended by other vegans. I did a similar thing to find the best vegan protein powder if youre interested.

Do Thinkthin Bars Work

Regarding giving healthy proteins in a gluten-free product, ThinkThin protein bars nutrition facts seem all right. However, we were curious to investigate the no-sugar claim and the extent of carbs in thinkThin bars.

Of the many products they have, we checked a few and found that each bar has over 20 grams of carbohydrates and more than 200 calories. Both of these seem to be slightly on the higher side, even though we are promised zero sugar.

Maltitol, a hypocaloric sweetener, is the ingredient used by thinkThin to replace sugar, and we also wanted to check if maltitol has any other adverse outcomes.

According to The Journal of Molecular Medicine, maltitol doesnt seem to have any adverse effects on plasma glucose and serum insulin levels.

The same study concluded that if maltitol in bakery products replaces sucrose, the caloric content is reduced substantially.

According to The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, it seems that the too good to be true statements of naysayers regarding the zero sugar claim of thinkThin might be unjustified after all, since it appears to be supported by scientific studies that the ingredient used to replace sugar does not have any adverse effects.

So does thinkThin work? In terms of their stated objective of thinking thin, it seems to be stretching it a bit with 200 plus calories in each bar.

Not just any protein bar landed a spot on our list of best protein bars. We compiled a list of over 100 protein bars so we could compare their nutrition and ingredient information. With the help of dietitians, we came up with specifical nutritional and ingredient criteria we had to follow to select the best protein bars:

  • 8 grams protein minimum: To qualify as a “protein bar,” each bar had to have no less than 8 grams of protein. Hillary Cecere, RDN of Eat Clean Bro, a meal delivery service, recommends aiming for 15-20 grams of protein if you’re looking to gain muscle and 7-12 grams of protein for a satiating snack.
  • 13 grams sugar maximum: The best protein bars have no more than 13 grams of sugar.
  • 3 grams fiber minimum: When it comes to fiber, Fine recommends opting for a protein bar with 3 or more grams per bar or serving. “However, caution with those boasting more than 10 grams of fiber as these are likely loaded with isolated fibers that can cause stomach discomfort,” says Fine.

Despite having 22 grams of added sugar, it still tastes bad. I really dont know how thats possible.

The main protein is brown rice protein, and the bar differentiates itself by having a mix of greens in the ingredients. But when you look at the nutritional facts, youre not getting many vitamins or minerals.

Heres why it scored the way it did:

  • Protein content With 21.8% of calories from protein, its worse than most. It has more sugar than protein.
  • Taste score As I said, the flavor is just bad. Aside from the dark chocolate coating, the inside texture is quite mushy and isnt great .
  • Cost The bars are on the expensive side, and even though they have a decent amount of protein, theyre still more expensive than most per bar.

Q: Can Protein Bars Replace Meals

Reviewing Built Bars | Are they actually “the world’s best tasting protein bar”?

A: While it is possible to use a protein bar as a meal replacement thats not their primary purpose. Yes, they are convenient, and yes, there are plenty of protein bar brands out there that go a long way to provide a more balanced and nutritionally dense formula but overall a regular meal is going to win hands down. If you are caught on the hop though, for sure taking a protein bar is far more advisable than missing a meal entirely and as additional protein dense snacks to top up your daily quota they are fantastic. The same can also be said for protein shakes which again, are designed to be complementary rather than a replacement for one of your existing three a day meals.

Most protein bars manufactured today come fortified with a good selection of your recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals, but there is never a substitute for real food! While some of the more advanced bars on the market do contain whole food ingredients, they still tend to be classified overall as a dietary supplement as opposed to a food source.

My Experience With Think

What led me to think! Protein Bars was not dieting or weight loss, it was increasing my daily protein intake. At the time, my physical fitness aim was on strength and tone, so getting enough protein to help build my muscles was important. And I was working with a personal trainer several times a week to help me achieve this. Through some casual macro tracking with the app, MyFitnessPal, I learned that my daily protein intake was way low. Carbs and fats largely outweighed the protein I consumed each day, so I started adjusting my diet and looking for better protein sources. The focus was to up my protein to help with muscle building and stamina.

I didnt order the other 2 top bars in any particular order. Clif Builders bars are easy to find in store, has palm oil, and is soy protein based.

Most Clif bars are vegan, including these protein bars. Just be careful that you dont buy Clifs whey protein bars

Heres a breakdown of its scores:

  • Protein content Of the 270 calories, just under 30% come from protein, which is about average for the bars I reviewed.
  • Taste score This protein bar was easy to rate, it tastes like a candy bar.
  • Cost Not only are the bars on the cheap end individually, but they also contain a lot of protein, so they are actually the cheapest overall bar per 10g of protein.

Of the top 3, its the best tasting bar, but has the lowest protein content. This is due to the high sugar content (contains beet syrup, organic brown rice syrup, and organic cane syrup, which makes it okay as a post-workout bar, but I dont know if Id want to eat it otherwise.
