“Protein is great first thing in the morning because it gives our body something to burn for energy,” Lindsay Raffale, IIN certified holistic health & nutrition coach, and founder of Finely Nourished, tells Bustle. “Because our bodies ‘feed’ off of protein, and they do quite a bit of feeding at night while we sleep, it’s important to replenish that source in the morning.”

Which Whey Is Best: Concentrate Hydrolysate Or Isolate
There are three types of whey protein youll find on store shelves today: Concentrate, hydrolysate, and isolate.
While they all come from the same source of liquid whey, each type is processed differently, which has an impact on its nutritional profile and protein content.
Whey Concentrate: After liquid whey undergoes basic filtration and drying, it becomes whey concentrate. Whey concentrate is the most basic and least processed form of whey protein, which also means it’s the least expensive. Its higher in fat in carbohydrates than other sources, and lower in protein though this contributes to its delicious, creamy taste. However, whey concentrate is higher in lactose, which could be an issue for those with severe lactose intolerance.
Whey Isolate: When whey concentrate goes through a further purification process, whey isolate is produced. Isolate is lower in carbohydrates and fat, and much higher in protein , which means it gets digested faster than whey concentrate. While its not as creamy, its still pretty darn tasty, especially compared to some plant-based proteins. Its also incredibly low in lactose, which is another perk for those sensitive to dairy.

So, while all three types of whey have their pros and cons as well as science-backed benefits, I personally think whey protein isolate is whey superior for a number of reasons:

after. you need protein post-WO. if you were able to buy whey protein though i would have the whey post workout and have the protein bar as a snack like around 10-11 or something

Right after you workout. You body needs high protein after an intense workout.You can take it whenever but it will be best if you take it post workout.thats my 2 cents.

Whats More Important Taking A Protein Shake Before Or After Your Workout
The answer is, it really depends on you. It comes down to personal preference and whether or not you enjoy incorporating a protein shake into your diet.
There is, without a doubt, the benefit of adding some high-quality whey protein into the diet in terms of its bio-availability, as it can be quickly digested and used for muscle building. A study by Schoenfeld actually investigated whats better for muscle adaptations a pre- or post-workout shake. The results didnt show favour one way or the other when total daily protein and the quality was matched. Pre did not outperform post or vice versa.8
It really comes down to a preference- and convenience factor. You could go for a pre-workout shake, a post-workout shake or both. There is one rule however, make sure you get good quality protein in the time before and after your training.
So How Much Protein Should I Eatto Gain Muscle
The long answer is that it depends, as there is truly no one size fits all answer for a question such as this one. Luckily, however, its honestly not that complicated. A general rule of thumb is you eat 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. However, you dont need that much. Consuming anywhere between 0.7g -1g of protein per pound of bodyweight is an ideal amount of protein, something I repeat in hypertrophy nutrition. Heres an example.
Say I weigh 100 pounds. And Im also looking to build muscle.
Id need to eat anywhere between 70g-100g of protein. Simple as that.
Or if you weigh 150 pounds, youd need to eat anywhere between 105g-150g of protein.

Why Use A Protein Supplement
The general consensus among experts and researchers is that in order to build lean muscle mass, you need to be consuming between 1-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight a day.
You can read another article I wrote about how much protein is needed to build muscle HERE. In the article, I outline the specific research that suggests that 1-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
Needless to say, most people will be able to consume the required amount of protein through a normal, healthy, clean diet with an emphasis on protein rich foods.

Supplements are mainly designed for convenience. If you are out and about and its going to be a while before your next meal, then a supplement can help you maintain your protein intake levels required for building lean muscle.
Most serious athletes use supplements both just before and just after a workout, and they do this in order to maximize the results from there weight training.

According to research published in 2014 in the journal “Nutrition & Metabolism,” protein is a more satiating nutrient than either carbohydrates or fat, and people who eat high-protein meals generally feel fuller than they do after eating meals with less protein. The research also indicated that the source of protein matters whey and pea proteins were found to be more satiating than casein protein, for example. So if reducing overall calorie consumption is a goal for you, it may make sense to seek out breakfast bars that are based on those proteins.
