Make A Vegan Protein Shake

Whats the Best Plant Based Protein Powder for Weight Loss?

The first and most common use for vegan protein powder is to make a vegan milk shake:

  • Pour 1½ cups of water or your preferred dairy substitute into a shaker or blender.
  • Scoop 1 serving of Huge Vegan, or your preferred protein powder, into the shaker or blender.
  • Add a handful of ice cubes to the mix and blend until smooth.
  • For more flavor, add banana, mango, or your favorite berries to transform your milkshake into a smoothie.
  • Drink at least 1 shake a day to help supplement some of your daily protein requirements. We recommend getting at least half of your protein intake from a healthy diet but, if youre struggling to do so, protein powders are an excellent way to boost your consumption.

    Best Vegan Protein Powder

Huel, better known for its plant-based meal replacement powders, has branched out into flavored products and nutritionally balanced snacks, including this impressive protein powder, which pulls off the rare feat of achieving excellent flavor and texture in a plant-based product alongside a complete nutrition package.

Reviewers are impressed with the taste – “by far the best tasting protein drink Ive tried,” says one reviewer. The main objection in the reviews is the price, especially when compared to non-plant-based protein powders. At the same time they mostly acknowledge that the nutritional profile and ingredients are of a quality that justifies the price.

Its not intended as a meal replacement or for your sole source of nutrition, as it has a lower calorie and carbohydrate profile than would be recommended for a complete meal, but nevertheless it is a nutritionally complete high protein snack. Using pea, faba pea and hemp seed as its protein source, it contains all 26 recommended vitamins and minerals and meets the UK and EU recommendations for macro- and micronutrients.

There are a few potential issues. Theres a minimum order of two tubs, and it doesnt come in sample sizes, which might make you reluctant to commit to a particular flavor. It claims that the tubs are recyclable, though not every area will recycle this kind of tub, and it doesnt have the sustainability credentials of some vegan protein powders.

Is It A Complete Protein Powder

One of the most important questions to ask yourself if you are looking for a vegan protein powder is whether it is a complete source of protein. Lets break this down. A complete protein contains all nine essential amino acids, which your body cannot produce itself: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Your body combines these organic compounds to form the proteins needs to perform important functions such as growing and repairing muscle tissue .

When choosing a protein powder, ensure that you are choosing a protein blend that provides you with complete proteins. Because plant sources may not contain all nine essential amino acids, we recommend that vegans, and those that follow a dairy free diet, choose a plant-based protein powder blend with all nine essential amino acids.

Is Vegan Protein Powder As Good As Whey

For years plant-based protein was put down because it was considered less than equal to whey protein. The reasoning was that most plant-based proteins dont contain all the essential amino acids like whey does.

The essential amino acids are the ones found in protein sources that your body cannot make on its own. Not only do you need amino acids to build and maintain lean muscle, your body needs these amino acids to perform its various functions properly!

Although many vegan proteins may be missing some amino acids, high-quality brands like IdealRaw Organic Protein are sure to include a wide range of plant protein sources so you do get all the essential amino acids. It all depends on the sources!

The Best Vegan Protein Powder For Making Plant

    ByLucy Gornallpublished 6 April 22

Weve necked a wide range of vanilla, chocolate and more inventively flavoured shakes to bring you this list of the best vegan protein powders

Compiling a list of the best vegan protein powders used to be a lot easier. Plant-based options were few and far between so a best of list could default to heres whats available. Now were spoiled for choice, and theres no way even the most committed vegan athlete could chug their way through tubs of every brands offering. We can, though. We asked the best protein powder brands to provide us with samples of their plant-based options and slurped our way through the lot to help narrow down your options.

Vegan protein powders tend to use a variety of protein sources, with soy, pea, hemp and rice the most common. Often these sources are combined to create a complete protein one that has all the essential amino acids. Soy is a complete protein, but if you think soy doesnt agree with you, look for a rice and pea pairing for a soy-free vegan powder that is also complete.

If you need supplementation, take your pick from the best vegan protein powders weve tried.

When mixed with water, there are no lumps and the consistency is just right with no hint of graininess to the texture. Theres no earthy taste and we loved the quirkier flavours, especially tiramisu and banoffee.

The only downside is that it just doesnt work in porridges, bakes or smoothies.

    Per serving: 160 calories | 20g protein | 14g carbs

A few things stood out with VeganSmart:

    • Good texture, not very chalky at all.
    • Bit of a bland flavor, but decent.
    • A small aftertaste.

Its fairly easy to drink, but I wouldnt exactly say its a pleasure.

The real draw of VeganSmart is clear when you see its ingredients:

    • Complete Protein Blend Pea Protein Isolate, Quinoa Protein, Chia Protein, Potato Protein, Chlorella Protein
    • Fiber & Omega Blend Inulin, Flax Seed Powder, Bamboo Fiber, Pea Fiber, Apple Fruit Fiber, Borage Oil
    • Vegan Energy Blend Organic Cane Sugar, Sunflower Oil, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Organic Rice Syrup Solids
    • Whole Food Complex Apricot, Mango, Raspberry, Carrot Root, Pineapple, Broccoli, Cabbage Leaf, Beet Root, Spinach Leaf
    • Digestive Enzyme Blend Bromelain, Protease, Amylase, Lipase
    • Prebiotics Aloe Vera Inner Leaf
    • Other Natural Flavors, Organic Stevia, Xanthan Gum

The prebiotics and digestive enzymes should help you digest your shakes better and hopefully minimize bloating and gas. This is great for any vegan with stomach problems.

Side note about prebiotics vs probiotics Probiotics are the actual good bacteria in your gut that break down food. Prebiotics are essentially dietary fiber that feed those probiotics to encourage them to grow. Both are considered healthy diet additions for most people.

This is more of a meal replacement shake, which is why the ratio of protein to calories isnt amazing.

Is It Bad To Rely On Protein Powder

Whats The Best Plant Based Protein Powder? Answer: Wholefoods!

I drink one or two protein shakes per day.

Theres nothing wrong with it, its just that protein powders dont typically give you any extra nutrition. So youre still going to have to get all your vitamins, minerals, and fiber from actual food sources.

Id recommend getting as much protein from whole foods as possible, and then using protein powder to hit your macros if needed.

See my guide on how to get enough protein as a vegan if youre struggling with this. There are quite a few good plant-based foods for protein .

    Why Do We Need Protein

Every cell in the human body contains protein. Protein has more than one job to do in the body with effects on muscle growth, immunity and energy.

Protein is one of the essential macronutrients and it helps to build muscle, repair muscle tissue and make enzymes and hormones.

Without adequate protein in the diet, there is a risk that these essential areas are not maintained, and we run the risk of becoming ill.

So, it is important we make sure we get adequate protein in our diets.

The RNI is set at 0.75g of protein per kilogram of body weight for adults.

How Is Vegan Protein Powder Made

How do they turn plants into a concentrated protein powder?

Theres not an obvious answer. But after doing some digging, its pretty simple.

    Let me break it down.

If youve looked at what vegan protein powder is made of, you know that there are 4 main components in most powders:

    • A protein isolate pea, brown rice, hemp, or soy usually
    • Nutritional ingredients flaxseed, chia seeds, or kale to add some nutrition to the powder
    • Flavoring ingredients natural flavors, cocoa powder, vanilla
    • Stabilizers for texture, guar gum, acacia gum, or xanthan gum is added

The ingredients are literally just blended together, theres nothing special going on there.

Its worth noting that theres typically a mix of protein isolates, in order to balance amino acid profiles.

    So that leaves one question:

Where does protein isolate come from?

Thats a bit more complicated, but let me try and simplify it.

    Reduced Risk Of Allergy

Choosing vegan protein powders over animal protein-based ones can help you avoid common food allergens, including casein and whey. With that said, some plant-based protein powders are made with soy, which is also a common food allergen. If you have any food allergies, intolerances or sensitivities, read protein powder ingredient labels carefully before making a purchase.

What About Sugar In Protein Powders

Sugar is added to most of our food, and vegan protein powders are no exception. Often, sugar improves the natural flavor of plant-based protein powders. While added sugar isnt bad in small doses, it does add additional calories without any additional nutrients. The American Heart Association recommends limiting the amount of added sugars you consume to no more than half of your daily discretionary calorie allowance. For most American women, this is no more than 100 calories coming from sugar per day and no more than 150 calories coming from sugar per day for men. This approximately six teaspoons of sugar per day for women and nine teaspoons per day for men.

When thinking about your own health needs you may want to consider a protein powder sweetened from natural sugars rather than an artificially sweetened protein powder. Artificial sweeteners commonly found in protein powders include Acesulfame-potassium and sucralose .

How Is Vegan Protein Powder Isolate Made

It starts with a plant, whether its peas, rice, hemp, or soybeans.

They all contain, in different proportions, all 3 macronutrients:

  • Fats
  • Protein
  • New vegans often turn to plant-based protein powder to help meet protein goals.

But how do they get protein from ingredients like peas? The challenge is to isolate the protein from the fats and carbohydrates, and thats what this post will cover.

There are multiple ways to do this in a commercial setting. Keep in mind that the goal is near complete protein isolate . There are some methods that work, but leave too much carbohydrate, so those products are not usually used in protein powders.

Here are the most common methods that are relevant.

The Benefits Of Using Vegan Protein Powder

    Protein Shakes

How much protein you need will depend on your body weight – so it differs for all of us, especially if youre working out regularly. The average is 0.75g of protein per kg of body weight, rising to 1-1.2g in the over-65s and 1.2-2g for the very physically active.

So, where should you start, if you want to increase your protein intake? The easy way to increase your protein intake is to start with regular food, says Dr Dehghan. “You can easily increase your protein intake by just adding hemp seeds, tofu or any other protein source to your smoothies or meals.”

If youre looking to supplement your protein intake Dehghan recommends soy and pea proteins. “Both have been around for a long time and most studies use soy or pea protein powders to compare with whey protein. Another one of my favorites is protein powders that use a combination of different protein sources, for example, pea and brown rice.”
