Catching Hidden Carbs: Using Thin Slim Foods Zero Carb Bread As An Example

what I eat in a day: low carb & high protein

When looking for keto-friendly foods to add to your diet, youll find some products labeled as having zero net carbs or zero carbs. However, this doesnt mean that there are absolutely no carbs in the product. What this really indicates is that it has less than one gram of net carbs per serving.

Although this is a small difference that wont have a significant impact on your weight loss, these hidden net carbs can add up and reduce ketone production if you are eating multiple servings.

To help illustrate my point, lets take a look at a popular zero-carb bread product made by ThinSlim Foods:

This product is marketed as having zero net carbs, and by using the net carb equation we learned earlier , their claims seem to hold up.

However, if we take a closer look at the label we find five ingredients that have trace amounts of net carbs in them. Also worth noting is that the serving size is relatively small, being one slice of a one-ounce piece of bread.

Altogether, this means that one slice of this bread is going to have between 0 and 1 grams of net carbs in it. If you are being cautious with your net carb intake, you may want to count each slice as having one gram of net carbs to play it safe.

How Kidneys Are Damaged

Many different diseases, drugs, toxins, and inherited disorders can lead to kidney damage.

However, by far the two most common causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which can damage the kidneys delicate blood vessels and tissues.1

When the root causes of these two diseases are not addressed, chronic kidney disease and ultimately kidney failure can be the result. In the US, diabetes causes 44%, and high blood pressure causes 29% of all cases of end-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.2

Why does this happen?

In the case of diabetes, high blood sugars over long periods of time can cause glucose to bind to vital proteins in the bloodstream. This process, known as glycation, results in the formation of advanced glycation end-products . AGEs can cause abnormal changes to proteins and to receptors that ultimately injure the filtering segments of the kidney. This glycation creates a vicious cycle of additional injuries to tissues that results in progressive kidney damage, called diabetic nephropathy.3

With high blood pressure, the problem is simply too much pressure. Exposing the delicate filtering portion of kidneys to blood that is moving too hard and fast causes scarring, which damages the kidneys. This results in a loss of kidney function, leading to chronic kidney disease or eventually kidney failure.4

If you call it the Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Dukan Diet or Paleo they are all very much the same. They tend to emphasise:

  • A high intake of animal proteins like red meat, chicken, fish and eggs
  • Combined with a sharp reduction in carbohydrates including breads, rice, pastas, grains, legumes and fruits and
  • In some cases, a high intake of fat is also encouraged, especially from nuts, seeds, extra virgin cold pressed olive oil, coconut oils, full-cream dairy products, butter and ghee.

While high protein diets may be getting some things right by encouraging plenty of vegetables and advocating no refined foods there are other parts that you may want to reconsider.

Cons Of A 1200 Calorie High Protein Low Carb Diet

Despite the above benefits, a 1200 calories low carb high protein diet plan can have some cons and drawbacks. They include:

  • Bloating and constipation.Due to consuming small amounts of carbs, your body tends to lack fiber. Fiber plays a vital role in keeping the digestive tract flowing and healthy, and without it, you are likely to suffer from bloating and constipation.
  • Weight gain. This will most likely happen if you are not paying attention to your 1200 calorie limit. Healthy foods can make you gain weight because extra calories will still be converted into fat regardless of whether they are from healthy or unhealthy food sources.
  • Heart disease. When choosing high protein low carb foods, some people choose options that are quite high in fats such as red meat and full-fat dairy products. These foods cause high cholesterol leading to clogged arteries, heart attacks, and strokes. Always go for lean cuts of meat and low fat dairy products.
  • Increased risks of kidney stones .
  • Worsening kidney problems.Anyone with a kidney problem should not try a high protein low carbohydrate diet because your body may have trouble eliminating all the waste products of protein metabolism.

While the 1200 calorie high protein low carb diet is a relatively safe eating plan for most people, it is always a good idea to first speak to your doctor or dietitian before deciding to undertake it.

Risks And Side Effects

Keep in mind that just because a food or meal is low in carbs doesnt necessarily mean its healthy. In many cases, the quality of the carbs you eat is even more important than the quantity.

For the sake of keeping processed/synthetic ingredients out of your diet, focus on avoiding low-carb packaged foods like most commercial protein bars or meal replacement shakes. These may provide fat and protein, and be low in sugar or carbs, but theyre still not beneficial overall if they contain things like processed protein powders, refined oils and artificial sweeteners.

Its also wise to steer clear of diet or light foods that have reduced or low fat and artificial ingredients. To make up for lost fat, these products are usually made with extra flour or carbs, thickeners, emulsifiers or artificial sweeteners.

Finally, skip foods made with trans fats or hydrogenated oils, which is mostly junk foods, packaged foods or fast/fried foods.

How Can A Low

How and what to eat – low carb, lo carb high protein, better fat omega 3 – Anthony Davis, MD

The low-carb approach is based on a belief that lowering carb intake will eventually lower the bodys insulin levels. Consistent low levels of insulin improve cardiometabolic function. While such diets induce significant weight loss in the first six months, research is still underway to understand the exact mechanism and long-term efficacy of a low-carb diet.

A low-carb diet is claimed to cause fewer fluctuations in sugar levels and less rebound hypoglycemia, leading to better satiety. This diet is rich in proteins and good fats, reducing your hunger pangs and frequent snacking.

The ketogenic diet, a specific version of a low-carb diet, restricts the carbohydrate intake to 20 to 50 grams daily. This causes the body glycogen stores to go down and mobilize fat storage in the body to form ketone bodies. Your body burns fat and not carbs for energy, leading to weight loss. The ketone bodies also exert a protective effect over the nerve cells and muscle mass. The keto diet, it is claimed, slows down the progression of cancer cells, prevents nerve cell degeneration in those with epilepsy, and reduces the inflammatory chemical messengers in the body.

Drastic reduction in carbohydrate intake also puts your body into ketosis. Ketosis is a condition in which the fats get converted to ketones. With ketosis, you suffer from bad breath, headache, fatigue, and weakness, especially in the initial days.

In the long run, severe restrictions due to a low-carb diet can also cause problems in your digestive system, along with nutritional deficiencies.

The Ultimate Zero Carb Food List

Technically speaking, almost every natural food contains at least a small trace of carbs. The only foods that literally have zero carbs are fats/oils . For this reason, many of the foods on this zero carb list actually have trace amounts of carbs at fractions of a gram.

To make our zero carb list, the particular food, beverage, or ingredient in question must meet these criteria:

    • It contains less than one gram of net carbs per serving.
    • It isnt commonly consumed in large enough quantities for it to make a substantial impact on daily carb consumption.

If a specific item contains more than a gram of net carbs per serving or is typically consumed so much that itll cause carb intake to climb, then it will likely be found on the almost zero-carb list.

Most keto dieters can add these zero carb foods to there diet without worrying about the trace amounts of net carbs. For those of you trying to keep carbs as low as possible, however, make sure you track your servings as trace amounts of carbs can really add up at the end of the day.

Weve broken the list down into multiple categories based on item type and practical use on the keto diet.

Carbohydrates, particularly whole grain varieties, also provide valuable nutrients such as B vitamins, so those who reduce carbohydrate intake to very low levels are at risk of deficiencies. See also: Carb cycling for weight loss
