Fruits are an important food group. Though they are by no means competing with beans for protein content, they do include some protein.
The list below shows fruits rich in protein. Unlike other plant-based foods rich in protein we listed in this article, fruits dont have many grams of protein per 100 g portion.
However, their low caloric density enables them to still provide quite a bit of protein per 300 calories of fruit.
Hemp Seeds Are Incredibly Nutritious
Technically a nut, hemp seeds are very nutritious. They have a mild, nutty flavor and are often referred to as hemp hearts.
Hemp seeds contain over 30% fat. They are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid .
They also contain gamma-linolenic acid, which has been linked to several health benefits .
Hemp seeds are a great protein source, as more than 25% of their total calories are from high-quality protein.
Hemp seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc .
Hemp seeds can be consumed raw, cooked or roasted. Hemp seed oil is also very healthy and has been used as a food and medicine in China for at least 3,000 years .
Summary Hemp seeds are rich in healthy fats and essential fatty acids. They are also a great protein source and contain high amounts of vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.
How Much Protein Do Most Of Us Really Need
For the general population, getting 1015 percent of daily calories from protein is sufficient. This is true even for people who lead an active lifestyle.
Government-issued recommendations for protein intake have varied over the years. Currently, the U.S. governments protein RDA is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. The World Health Organization, on the other hand, recommends 0.66 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For a 140-pound person, the U.S. RDA translates to about 50 grams of protein a day if that person consumes 2,000 calories in a day, 50 grams of protein is exactly 10 percent of total calories.

Where Do Vegans Get Their Protein
Theres no shortage of lists of high-quality vegan protein sources. But as you might expect, theyre often topped by soy products , seitan, and legumes.
My personal favorite vegan foods for protein in rough, descending order of how often I eat them are:
- Lentils , 18 grams of protein per cup
- Chickpeas, 12 grams/cup
- Tempeh , 41 grams per cup
- Black beans, 15 grams per cup
- Nuts and nut butters , varied
- Tofu, 11 grams per 4 ounces
- Quinoa, 9 grams per cup
- Other legumes, varied
- Grains, varied
I often, but not always, add vegan protein powder to my smoothie each morning depending on my fitness goals at the time. My son, for example, is an athlete trying to gain weight on a vegan diet, so he always includes protein in his smoothie.
Smoothies, in general, are a great way to boost protein intake on a plant-based diet, since you can easily add lots of other high-protein ingredients like walnuts, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, and almond butter, and even beans .

Nuts and seeds rank third because of the package that their protein comes in. While they are absolutely a great addition to a balanced diet, they are higher in fat and calories so should be consumed mindfully. On the flip side, they are wonderful in helping to ensure plant-based eaters do actually get enough unsaturated fat and calories. Nuts and seeds contain high levels of protein and are a better source of iron than whole grains.
Quinoa, like soy, is an example of a complete plant-based protein source. Its a great alternative to oats in porridge , a delicious addition to soups and stews and a yummy salad base in place of pasta or rice. Youll find 8.2g of protein and 15.4% of your iron RDA in a cup of cooked quinoa
- Hemp seeds
Another complete protein source, adding ¼ cup of hemp seeds to your porridge or a stir fry boosts your protein intake by 12.5g and provides 18% of your RDA of iron too. They are also a great plant-based source of omega 3.
- Flax seeds
Flax seeds are similar to hemp seeds in their nutritional make-up. ¼ cup contains: 8g protein, 13% of your RDA of iron, 12g of fibre and antioxidants.
Almonds are incredibly nutrient-dense: 1 oz provides you with 21g of protein and 37% of your RDA of Vitamin E. However, the same amount also contains 14g of fat . Therefore, almonds are a protein package to consume regularly but mindfully as part of a balance diet.

What Are Some Easy Ways To Incorporate Plant
According to Sass, when you’re eating healthfully, the bulk of your meals should be plant-based anyway: veggies, a plant-based fat, like extra virgin olive oil, avocado, or tahini and a whole grain or starchy veggie, like quinoa, brown rice, sweet potato or spaghetti squash.
That means the only switch you need to make is to trade your meat for a plant alternative, which is easier than you think, she says. For many people, when they think about what to make for dinner they focus on meat first. Change that pattern by adding pulses and pea protein-based meat substitutes to your protein list, she suggests.

How To Cook With Plant
When using a plant-based protein, take into consideration that its cooking properties can differ from that of an animal-based protein. For instance, if using canned beans in a chili in place of raw ground beef, you wont need to sauté the beans. Flavor will differ, too. You may get less umami that savory sense of taste.
