Eating about 8 ounces per week of a variety of seafood, the amount recommended for many adults, as part of a healthy diet, can support health. Fruit And Vegetables: Are You Getting Your 5 A Day
Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals and fibre, and should make up just over a third of the food you eat each day.
It’s recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. They can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced.
There’s evidence that people who eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.
Eating 5 portions is not as hard as it sounds.
A portion is:
- 80g of fresh, canned or frozen fruit and vegetables
- 30g of dried fruit which should be kept to mealtimes
- 150ml glass of fruit juice or smoothie but do not have more than 1 portion a day as these drinks are sugary and can damage teeth
Just 1 apple, banana, pear or similar-sized fruit is 1 portion each.
A slice of pineapple or melon is also 1 portion, and 3 heaped tablespoons of vegetables is another portion.
Adding a tablespoon of dried fruit, such as raisins, to your morning cereal is an easy way to get 1 portion.
You could also swap your mid-morning biscuit for a banana, and add a side salad to your lunch.
In the evening, have a portion of vegetables with dinner and fresh fruit with plain, lower fat yoghurt for dessert to reach your 5 A Day.
Red And Processed Meat And Cancer Risk
Protein is essential for good health, but some high protein foods may be better for our health than others. The number one question I get on this blog is how much protein do we need. The answer is, if you are eating adequate energy, meaning your calories are enough to maintain your weight), than its likely you do not need to worry about the amount of protein you are consuming.
Most foods, even vegetables, contain some amount of protein, so if you are consuming adequate calories, you probably have enough protein.
With that said, the amount of protein you might want to get in your diet, can move towards depends on your goals.
For the average adult however, 1.0-1.6 grams of protein per kg of body weight is a general guideline. Converted to pounds, this means, if you are 100 lbs, you would thrive consuming approximately 50-70 grams of protein per day.

What is protein?
Dr. Zello: Proteins are composed of amino acids. These amino acids are placed in a precise order by a genetic code specific to each protein. There are two kinds of amino acids, those that our body can make from others amino acids and those that have to come from the food we eat . Furthermore, protein is our source of nitrogen that we also require to make essential nitrogen-containing compounds.

- Eating patterns that include legumes, nuts, fish and other seafood are linked with a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, weight gain and some cancers.
- Low iron levels are a problem for some New Zealanders, particularly young women. Red meat is an excellent source of iron and zinc, but it is recommended you eat less than 500 g of cooked red meat to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
- Eating processed meat can be high in fat and salt and is also linked with a higher risk of bowel cancer.

However, consumption of fish protein as a percentage of total animal protein consumed is high among developing countries in Asia and Africa, as compared to developed countries where intake of terrestrial animal protein intake is high indicating the importance of fish in the nutritional security of poor in developing countries.

As we can see in Figure 2, both animal and plant-based foods can be rich sources of protein. But do they have the same quality?
The quality of a protein can be defined in many ways however, all definitions relate to the distribution and proportion of essential and non-essential amino acids they contain. In general, animal-based proteins are of higher quality as they contain higher proportions of essential amino acids compared to plant-based proteins.
There is a common misconception that plant-based proteins completely lack certain essential amino acids. In fact, most plant-based proteins will contain all 20 amino acids but tend to have a limited amount of certain essential amino acids, known as their limiting amino acid. This means, if a small number of plant foods are consumed as the only protein sources, they are unlikely to supply enough essential amino acids to meet our requirements. For people who consume little to no animal-based foods, such as vegans or vegetarians, it is important that they consume protein from sources with complementary limiting amino acids. For example, consuming rice and beans will provide complementary amino acids that can help meet essential amino acid requirements.

Ideally, consuming proteins from a variety of sources is the best strategy. When you vary your protein, you are able to get a wide range of nutrients that assist your body in using the protein.
If you are counting calories however, the proteins with the lowest calories are the foods where there arent other macronutrients, such as carbs or fat. For example, nuts have more calories per gram of protein because it also comes with fats. Milk will have more calories per gram of protein because it has carbohydrates in addition to protein.
Lean meats, where there is virtually little fat or carbs, will have the most protein per calorie.
