What Is High Protein Milk
Despite having a relatively low level by itself, milk is considered an important source of protein, particularly in Western cultures. High protein milk exists in various forms, including milk harvested from cows that simply have higher protein levels, powdered milk supplements or other dairy products. Processed dairy products such as cheese and milk additionally contain high levels of protein.
Due to the amount of water present, milk has a fairly low quantity of protein. The casein protein found in milk, however, is considered to be of high quality. Casein protein contains all essential amino acids. Skim milk and whole milk contain almost the same amount of casein protein.
Certain types of cows produce milk higher in protein than others. In 2003, dairy cows in New Zealand were genetically cloned that produced milk with unusually high protein levels, for example. Genetically modified animals, such as these cows, are often administered growth hormones. This is considered a controversial practice, as such hormones are often transmitted through the animal and into the harvested milk.

It Provides Additional Carbs Beneficial Around A Workout
Milk provides additional carbs, compared to mixing it with water, which is helpful pre and post-workout for additional energy and recovery.
Carbs are important around a workout to both provide quick energy as well as replenish our energy store to promote recovery. If we are just mixing our whey protein with water, we are missing out on these benefits.
While the carbs in milk wont replace a meal, its a great way to add in some carbs to your post-workout shake and start your recovery process as youre heading home before you have time to eat. Think of it like icing on a cake, adding additional benefits to your protein shake which is already helping you reach your muscle-building goals.
Make sure you are considering the type of milk you are consuming. Before a workout we want the fat to be low, so skim or 1% is a good option. Post-workout, adding in some fats is beneficial so whole milk is a great choice.

How To Choose Between Casein Protein And Whey Protein
Both the casein protein and whey protein supplements are a powerful source of protein. So, how should you determine which one of the two is the best protein supplement? Due to the difference in the level of various amino acids, both have their own unique advantages.
Strength and Muscle
Whey protein is rich in branched-chain amino acids and has a high biological utilization rate. BCAAs are responsible for enhancing muscle protein synthesis. Researchers compared the rate of muscle protein synthesis with whey protein, casein protein, and milk protein. The study concluded that whey protein was fast, the milk protein intermediate, and casein protein was slow in the initial peak time to synthesize muscle protein.
Weight Loss and Lean Muscle Mass
Both whey protein and casein protein promote weight loss and improve lean muscle mass. While both whey protein and casein protein can help keep you full, being that casein protein is a much slower digesting protein, it can help keep you satiated longer, which makes it a great option at night as well as between meals if needed.
The rise of the amino acid level in plasma after the ingestion of whey protein is fast and high, while it is slow with casein protein. A study indicates that although whey protein initiates the rapid synthesis of protein, a major part of this protein is used by the body. In contrast, the protein synthesized through casein accumulates in the body over a longer duration.

Protein Intake And Metabolic Disease Risk
One of the major concerns for individuals on high protein, low carbohydrate diets is the potential for the development of metabolic ketosis. As carbohydrate stores are reduced the body relies more upon fat as its primary energy source. The greater amount of free fatty acids that are utilized by the liver for energy will result in a greater production and release of ketone bodies in the circulation. This will increase the risk for metabolic acidosis and can potentially lead to a coma and death. A recent multi-site clinical study examined the effects of low-carbohydrate, high protein diets and reported significant elevation in ketone bodies during the first three months of the study. However, as the study duration continued the percentage of subjects with positive urinary ketone concentrations became reduced, and by six months urinary ketones were not present in any of the subjects.

Visual Guide Zero Waste Protein Milk
First and foremost, you cant make a nut milk without soaking your nuts over night. Simply take one cup of your chosen nut and place them in a jar. Cover with water so all the nuts are submerged and let sit, covered, over night.
In the morning, the nuts need to be rinsed. Rinse until the water runs clear and clean.
Add the rinsed nuts to a high speed blender. Add 4 cups of water. Blend on high for 30 seconds. The almonds will not break down entirely so youll need to have a nut milk bag.
Once blended, add about half of the milk to your nut milk bag placing it over a bowl or receptacle of your choice to collect the milk. I prefer to use my 4 cup measuring cup because its easier to pour from the spout into another container for storage. Now twist the top shut of the nut milk bag and squeeze the liquid out of the bag. It will look like its oozing out. Like the bag has pores. I find this to be very soothing.
Once youve strained all the milk out, add the rest of the milk from the blender and repeat until youve gotten all of the milk from the pulp into your container.
Wait!! dont throw that nut pulp away! There are so many awesome things you can do with it. Just check out this page for some awesome ideas. Remember, nothing should go to waste!
