Can I Make My Own Nutritional Cat Food
The safest and simplest way to meet a cats nutritional needs is to feed them a high-quality, AAFCO-approved canned cat food.
But what about making your own cat food? Yes, homemade cat foods can be a nutritious option, but they require a lot of extra effort, time, and money.
If youre interested in a homemade diet for your cat, schedule a consultation with a veterinary nutritionist or make use of services like Petdiets.com or BalanceIt.com that are run by veterinary nutritionists.
Do not make cat foods from recipes you find online or in books. Research has shown that they are rarely nutritionally complete and balanced.
How Much Fat Does My Cat Need
The AAFCO minimum for fat in all cat foods is 9% on a dry matter basis.
Significantly higher levels of fat may be appropriate for cats who are highly active or have trouble maintaining their weight. Diets designed for weight loss will usually contain less fat in comparison to adult maintenance cat foods.
What Is Crude Protein In Dog Food
To understand what crude protein in dog food is, look at the nutrition label on your dog food.
The first section of the dog food label is the ingredients list and the second section is the nutritional information section.
Protein levels listed in the nutrition label may be very different from the levels of crude protein listed on the bag.
Note: In the USA, the FDA requires some type of distinction be made between crude protein and the protein ingredients in dog food.

Cats With Kidney Disease
The jurys still out on whether protein restriction helps or hurts cats with kidney issues, but heres what we know.
The kidneys play a crucial role in the processing of nitrogenous wastes produced by protein digestion. Since cats with kidney disease have a reduced ability to process this waste, it builds up in their bloodstream. High blood urea nitrogen levels are a primary characteristic of kidney disease and a major part of why cats with CKD feel unwell.
To control the amount of waste in the bloodstream and ease the burden on the kidneys, cats with renal disease are traditionally given low-protein food.
This approach can help, but it can also hurt. A cat with kidney disease needs protein as much as any other cat. By restricting her protein intake, you might make your feline friend feel better than she did on her old diet, but you might also be helping the disease make her frail and skinny.
Some veterinarians suggest that instead of focusing on protein quantity alone, you need to think about protein quality. Highly-digestible protein, they say, is easier on the kidneys, tastes better, and it helps sick cats stay strong.
Lyn Thompson, BVSc says that Clinically, we find that renal cats eating a raw food diet do well on highly digestible proteins like rabbit, chicken, hare, and possum. Too little protein in the diet can lead to excessive weight loss that can be extremely detrimental to a cats general health.
Demystifying The Cat Diet
Many times a day I hear the following question from my clients: What is the best food to feed my cat? My answer is always dependent on the age, body condition and health of the cat. However, for the average adult healthy cat, I recommend a canned diet with the following composition greater than 50 percent of the calories ingested should be from protein, less than 10 percent daily calories from carbohydrates, and at least 30 percent of their daily calories from fat.
Why would I make this recommendation? It is for the following reasons.
Cats are obligate carnivores. They are designed to eat meat, not plants. An ideal diet for a cat would be five-to-six mice per day for your information, mice are high in protein , low in carbohydrates and approximately 48 kcal per mouse. Unlike omnivores, cats are unable to process and store carbohydrates well. Cats fed high carbohydrate diets have higher blood glucose levels compared to cats fed low carbohydrate diets due to their failure to convert excess glucose to glycogen . Many cats recently diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus are placed on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet and their diabetes has gone into remission. These cats no longer need insulin. In addition, it has been speculated that cats fed high carbohydrate diets may have a have a higher incidence of gastrointestinal disease due to their poor management of carbohydrates ingested and resultant bacterial overgrowth in their gastrointestinal tract.

Can Cats Be Allergic To Protein
Food allergies are fairly common in the feline population. Food allergies may result in symptoms such as:
Allergies to foods are generally triggered by specific proteins within the foods. In order to diagnose a food allergy, a diet trial must be completed. This involves feeding a strictly limited diet, or elimination diet, for a period of eight to 12 weeks.
If the diet trial results in a resolution of symptoms, the cat is generally diagnosed with a food allergy.

Aafco Crude Protein Requirements
AAFCO sets standards for pet foods in the United States. While compliance with AAFCO standards is not required for commercial pet foods, most veterinary nutritionists recommend feeding only diets that are AAFCO compliant.
These products will have a nutritional adequacy statement that states that the diet conforms to one of the AAFCO Dog or Cat Food Nutrient Profiles or Feeding Protocols.
An example of the importance of AAFCO compliance is further illustrated by a discussion of protein analysis. The Guaranteed Analysis section of the pet food label contains the percentages of each of the following:
Crude Protein is determined based on chemical analysis of all nitrogen-containing sources in the food. Therefore, some non-protein-containing sources, such as urea, can be included in the crude protein content.
AAFCO states that not more than 9% of the crude protein in a diet should be pepsin indigestible, meaning that at least 91% of the protein content of AAFCO-approved foods should be digestible protein. Therefore, diets that do not follow AAFCO recommendations may appear to contain adequate protein based on the percentage of Crude Protein however, this protein may be largely indigestible.
Pet foods that are AAFCO-compliant adhere to more in-depth nutrient profiles that also include recommended amounts of amino acids such as taurine and arginine.

We Chose Foods That Were Rich In High
Cats need a lot of protein. But its more complicated than just looking for high-protein food. Instead, we also have to think about the quality of that protein. When choosing the best cat food, we paid attention to the difference between crude protein and digestible protein.
Protein exists on a digestibility spectrum rated by biological value.
For example, 36g of crude protein from feathers is not equivalent to 36g of crude protein from an egg they have vastly different biological values. An egg has a biological value of 100 , while the feather is virtually indigestible.
Yet both the feather protein and the egg protein look lovely on the guaranteed analysis and lend the impression of a high-quality food capable of nourishing your cat.
Digestibility values, not percentages in the guaranteed analysis, are key to measuring nutritional value.
To make things a little more interesting, we dont know everything about protein digestibility in cats. No one has figured out exactly which protein sources are the most bioavailable or the least. Instead, were left to put together a picture based on what scarce information is available.

Wet Cat Foods With The Highest Protein Content
When it comes to protein content, not all wet cat foods are created equal. You’ve heard this a hundred times but it’s true. There’s a wide variety of cat foods but when you analyze their nutritional value, only a few will make it to the cut. So without further ado, here are the wet cat foods with the highest protein content based on our research.
Tiki Cat Hanalei Luau in Wild Salmon – Its main ingredients are salmon and salmon broth. This food is packed with no less than 15% crude protein. It is also grain-free which is perfect for your carnivorous feline.
Purina Pro Plan True Nature Grain-Free Formula Natural Turkey & Chicken Entree’ – This wet cat food is specially formulated to ensure a well-balanced feline diet. It is made with real turkey and chicken which are naturally high in protein. Each can has a minimum of 11% crude protein.
Crude Protein And Lean Meat
When you do some calculations, remember that it is difficult to count the nitrogen content of a meat product that is not lean. In fact, there is not a high enough value for that nitrogen content to put on a label on an uncooked bone.
Most dogs in the modern world are fed a high-quality commercial grade, ground meat, complete with pre-digested proteins and essential amino acids , while those that have no active interest in their own welfare are given higher-quality poultry and ground meats. These commercial grade proteins are fortified with minerals, vitamins, and nutrients and make for easy digestion.
Although the latter makes sense for many older or mentally or physically disabled dogs, it can be misleading when looking at the total picture, especially when comparing to the diets of smaller animals.

What Is Crude Protein In Cat Food
Proteins are the most essential nutrients in cat foods. They build blocks of body tissues and can serve as fuel sources for cats. We know the value of only protein but what is a crude protein in cat food and Is it any different from protein sources? In this article, we tell you all about crude protein in cat foods.
In short, for example, if a cat food product contains 40% crude protein along with other nutrients, it means that food contains that much protein in the product. Its good if cat foods have more crude protein than fat and fibers.
Because cats are carnivores, they need high crude protein for development and overall health. A true percentage of crude protein can provide maximum benefits for kittens and cats. So, its important for cat owners to buy high-protein cat food from quality brands.
