Complete Vs Incomplete Proteins
Every single food is made up of different combinations of amino acids and is characterized according to how much of each EAA they provide.
Foods that contain adequate amounts of all of nine EAAs are called complete proteins. Meat and other animal foods are considered complete sources because they have complete EAA profiles.
Foods that are missing one or more of the EAAs are called incomplete proteins. Most plant foods have incomplete protein profiles, which means that you must combine them with other plant foods that have different EAAs to make a complete protein meal. To complicate matters, the body isnt always able to absorb all the protein we eat. The bioavailability of plant EAAs is lower than that of animal sources. If the label says there are 13 grams of protein in a veggie burger, it doesnt mean that your body will actually be able to absorb and use all 13 grams.
Here is where strategic planning is involved. To meet your protein needs, you need to know which plant foods provide which EAAs and which can be combined to balance out the missing amino acids.

Next up I would like to talk to you about nuts, grains, and legumes. Nuts, though higher in fats and calories, are great sources of non-meat protein. A great snack to munch on is a piece of fruit paired with a handful of nuts. The protein that is within nuts will keep you feeling full for a longer amount of time than if you were to solely snack on a piece of fruit. Nuts are great additions to salads or on top of soups and stews as well. Who doesnt love an extra crunch every once in a while? Grains and legumes, such as beans, when paired together are known to create a complete protein. The beautiful thing about these pairings of foods is that they are extremely affordable and have an extremely long shelf life. If you are leading a waste-free lifestyle on top of your plant-based lifestyle, beans and grains are also super convenient to purchase in bulk. One of my favorite ways to eat protein-rich non-meat foods is to have a bean stew, or chili and pair it with a warm bed of grains such as rice or quinoa. These meals are also super easy to meal prep, so if you lead a busy lifestyle I suggest giving them a go.

During pregnancy and when breastfeeding, vegetarians need to make sure they get enough vitamins and minerals for their child to develop healthily.
If you’re bringing up your baby or child on a vegetarian diet, you need to make sure they eat a wide variety of foods to provide the energy and vitamins they need for growth.
Where Do Vegans Get Their Protein
Theres no shortage of lists of high-quality vegan protein sources. But as you might expect, theyre often topped by soy products , seitan, and legumes.
My personal favorite vegan foods for protein in rough, descending order of how often I eat them are:
- Lentils , 18 grams of protein per cup
- Chickpeas, 12 grams/cup
- Tempeh , 41 grams per cup
- Black beans, 15 grams per cup
- Nuts and nut butters , varied
- Tofu, 11 grams per 4 ounces
- Quinoa, 9 grams per cup

I often, but not always, add vegan protein powder to my smoothie each morning depending on my fitness goals at the time. My son, for example, is an athlete trying to gain weight on a vegan diet, so he always includes protein in his smoothie.
Smoothies, in general, are a great way to boost protein intake on a plant-based diet, since you can easily add lots of other high-protein ingredients like walnuts, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, and almond butter, and even beans .
