Nutrition Benefits Of High
Nothing compares to regular ice cream, but if you want to sneak in some extra protein to stay satiated and support your muscles and bones, rest assured that protein ice cream is an RD-approved method. “What you are putting in your protein ice cream can make all the difference from a nutrition standpoint,” says Nicole Lindel, M.S., R.D.N., registered dietitian and Everlywell advisor. “Using fruit, protein powder, Greek yogurt, and cow or nut milk makes for a delicious, well-balanced snack or meal.”
Eating the right amount of protein each day is essential to support your body’s functioning, notes Lindel. “It’s recommended that the average adult have 0.8 to 1.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight,” she notes. “However, this really depends on the individual. A variety of factors can contribute, such as age, sex, health, and level of physical activity. Protein is vital to growth and development. Our bodies need protein from the diet to build and maintain bones, muscles, and skin.”
And there you have it all you need is a blender, a few ingredients, and a heaping scoop of creativity, and you’re sure to find a frosty, protein-packed combination you’ll love.

We have added 2 tablespoon of protein powder to the ice cream. While the amount of protein in 2 tablespoon will depend on the brand and type of protein powder that you use, it is still a significant amount of protein.
Moreover, this high-protein ice cream has no artificial preservatives or colors. It has just five required ingredients.
We have used erythritol instead of other sugar alternatives because it is known to be good for your digestion.
It has the goodness of avocados, which has a lot of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fat that help your body grow stronger and healthier.

Another super important thing that I have noticed as the protein ice cream has improved is using a whey + casein blend protein powder. Yes, you can make it with whey protein alone but it will NOT be nearly as thick and creamy. The casein is what makes it creamy and thick.
The ice cream has been the thickest and creamiest it has even been when using my new ONE Protein. In this one I used the vanilla ice cream flavor but sometimes I also do the chocolate brownie flavor for a chocolate strawberry protein ice cream.

Thawing The Ice Cream
After its frozen properly, take the pan out of the freezer and leave it at a normal temperature for 10 to 15 for thawing it slightly. Then take your scoop and bowl to get the first bite on it. If youve got any confusion about how to make ice cream in a blender, take a look at a few video tutorials.
What Kind Of Protein Powder Is Best For This Protein Ice Cream Recipe
Although most forms of protein powder can be added to ice cream, whey protein powder is the best pick! The reason is that it helps increase the consistency of the unfrozen portion of the ice cream while maintaining both small air cells and small ice crystals.
In other words, it produces smoother and creamier ice cream that has good resistance to heat shock.

Additional Ingredients Chocolate Protein Ice Cream
- almond butter or peanut butter look for nut butter that doesnt have any added ingredients. I usually go for the store brand and read the label to make sure its just one or two ingredients, the nuts and salt. If you need a nut-free option, sunflower butter or tahini would be great substitutions.
- chocolate protein powder chocolate protein powder gives this ice cream a ton of chocolate flavor! I personally love the chocolate Nuzest protein powder. Its plant-based, has a minimal, clean ingredient list and is delicious. You can use my code eatingbirdfood for 15% off your order.
- cocoa powder add a little bit of extra chocolate flavor with the cocoa powder. Cacao works as well.
- chocolate chips or cacao nibs for added crunch and flavor! I like using Lilys chocolate chips because they are dairy-free, low in calories and sweetened with stevia so theres zero sugar added.
Keys To Great Vegan Protein Ice Cream
While its a simple recipe, its still possible to end up with a mediocre end result.
To get the best ice cream possible, make sure to:
- Pick a good tasting vegan protein powder Your ice cream will taste a lot like your protein powder, so if you pick a gross one, youll get gross ice cream. See my list of the best tasting vegan protein powders if you need help finding one.
- Use a blender While you can get away with hand mixing this recipe, a blender makes a significant difference in the texture. If you hand mix it, youll likely taste the small protein powder granules, which isnt particularly pleasant.
- Chill your coconut milk If your ice cream isnt sufficiently cold after you mix it and before you start freezing it, the watery part of coconut milk can start to separate and affect the final texture. I like to chill my coconut milk for at least a few hours, if not a full day in advance.

Things You Might Not Like About Ninja Blender While Making Ice Cream
Before you think that like a one-sided lover well just keep praising Ninja blenders, heres the spoiler or things that you might not like about the blender.
Noisy:These blenders are a bit noisy. Maybe theyre not the noisiest one but still, they might be loud enough to irritate you at times.
Vibration:One of the common features of Ninja blenders is, they come with a powerful motor and higher power means a higher level of vibration. So, you better be ready for a bit of shakiness there.

How To Make Protein Ice Cream
Using a food processor is the most seamless way to make this protein ice cream recipe. In my experience, a Nutribullet takes longer and leaves a few banana chunks, while a food processor creates a lighter, whipped texture with less liquid required.
You can eat the protein ice cream immediately or save it for later. Our recipe makes about three cups, give or take, depending on the size of your bananas.
The Best Blender For Ice Cream
Ive owned a lot of blenders, but my Vitamix is definitely the best one Ive owned. This high-speed blender will blend even the toughest of ingredients into a rich and creamy ice cream. I prefer using my blender to my food processor for recipes like this, as its much easier to clean the Vitamix. This is definitely one kitchen appliance we use on a daily basis!

Mixing The Ice And Milk
At this phase, you need to mix up the ingredients. Pour 1-2 ounces of coconut milk into the blender jar first. Then add 1.5 – 2 cups of ice and start blending them. Now start blending and keep doing that for 1-2 minutes.
In case you dont like using ice, just use coconut milk but make it chilled before using. This blending will make the texture smooth and silky.
I Also Get A Lot Of Questions Which Blender I Use
Personally I use a Vitamix. It was actually a over 20 year old Vitamix from parents that I just got upgraded this past Christmas. I am not in any way affiliated with them, but I am amazed at how reliable it is. I also know the DOCTOR himself is against Vitamix and uses a blender, but remember, THERE ARE NO RULES.

If you arent a fan of the new protein powders that have found their way into the market over the last decade, it could be that you just havent tried the right one!
Recently, I tried 13 different protein powders , to evaluate them for taste alone. I was so surprised how many of them I didnt like. Heres what I learned:
- Apparently, Im not a huge fan of powders sweetened with stevia
- The cheapest powders were pretty chalky.
- and I like my protein shakes to get very thick and creamy as opposed to milky and thin.
So, while my go-to protein brand I can buy at Costco or , my favorite TASTING protein powder is from Uniconutrition. The Apollo protein powders are OUT OF THIS WORLD!! For real, if you have some money to find out how amazing protein powder can taste, you should treat yourself to one of these! Diet soda say whaaaat? This is by far the most asked about protein ice cream ingredient, and I guess it does seem strange. The diet soda works like a semi leavening agent and creates a fluff effect in the ice cream. Seriously, ya just gotta try it.
I typically use Diet Dr. Pepper, but you can use any diet soda. In the photo above, I crumbled a bit of graham crackers on top. You could turn this into a strawberry cheesecake protein ice cream by adding a tablespoon of sugar free, fat free cheesecake pudding mix to the ice cream.
It May Cause Digestive Issues
Pay attention to the ingredients in protein ice creams that you buy in the market. Many of them have prebiotics and sugar alcohols such as xylitol which can cause gas, bloating, nausea, and other digestive problems.
I have used erythritol in my protein ice cream since it does not have the same digestive issues. I have not recommended adding any prebiotics either.

Chocolate Peanut Butter And Banana Protein Ice Cream
Ive said it before and Ill say it again: the chocolate, peanut butter, and banana triplet is the most underrated flavor tandem out there. For real real, its just so darn tasty.
- 1 large Frozen Banana
- 1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
- 1 Tbsp PB2 or Powdered Peanut Butter
- 1 Tbsp Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1/4 to 1/2 C Cashew Milk
Macros: 265 Calories, 27g Protein, 37g Carbs, 2g Fat
If you have the fat available, you could swap the PB2 for a tablespoon of real peanut butter to make this protein ice cream extra creamy. Depending on the size of your banana and the consistency of your protein powder, you may want to start with 1/4 C liquid and add as needed.
Which Sweetener Is Best In Vegan Ice Cream
Youll already get some sweetness from your vegan protein powder. Most products are sweetened with Stevia.
You can choose to add more Stevia or a sugar alcohol like erythritol if youre looking to minimize carbohydrates, but I realize that some people dont love the taste of them.
In most cases, sugar will end up tasting the best. Theres not too much sweetener in this, so it doesnt totally ruin the macros if you use sugar.
