Whey Protein Vs Plant Protein: For Muscle Building

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine are the BCAAs that play a crucial role in muscle protein synthesis. Whey proteins are the highest source of BCAA. It also contains all the essential amino acids which help in building and repairing muscle tissue .

Plant proteins lack in this regard. Even though this issue may be corrected by combining two or more types of plant proteins, whey protein still emerges the winner as it contains 20-30% more BCAA.

Research suggests that 2-3 g of leucine stimulates muscle protein synthesis . Plant-based protein, even in combinations contains a lower amount of leucine, while that is not the case with whey.

Summary: When it comes to muscle protein synthesis, whey is more efficient than plant protein because it contains all the essential amino acids, It has about 20-30% more BCAA and these are especially important for muscle building.

Whats The Best Type Of Protein For Weight Loss

Protein powder has a reputation for helping bodybuilders bulk up but what if your goal is weight loss? Should you supplement with whey protein, or is plant protein your best bet?

A 2013study titled The effects of 8 weeks of whey or rice protein supplementation on body composition and exercise performance published in Nutrition Journal studies both whey protein and rice proteins effects on the body. The athletes who used rice protein after doing resistance exercises over the course of eight weeks had an increase in lean body mass and decrease in fat-mass. Those who used whey protein also had very similar results. When researchers instructed the athletes to use the proteins in larger or maximum doses, the effects of the two protein types were once again comparable, if not completely equal. This leads researchers to believe that both whey protein and plant protein supplementation are great for fat loss and can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Does Whey Or Vegan Protein Powder Taste Better

One thing that I know for sure from my time before going vegan is that whey protein supplements typically taste better than vegan ones.

With that being said, it varies a lot by brand, and the best tasting vegan protein powders taste just as good or better than the best whey powders.

While Im speculating a bit, I think this explained by:

  • Pea protein texture varies a lot depending on the manufacturer and brand. Usually its pretty chunky and chalky, but some have finer grains of powder that seem to have a better texture.
  • Hemp protein isolate tastes pretty bad. Ive bought it by itself a few times , and had to add a lot of sweetener to make it edible.

Aside from the protein isolate, most of the taste will be dependent on sweeteners used and any other flavoring ingredients.

Some vegan protein powders taste like dirt, but the best ones taste just as good as any whey protein powder. Youll just find more variation in plant-based powders, so you may need to try a few of them before you find one you like.

Digestive Problems And Intolerances

One big area where I do think vegan protein normally comes out on top, and the reason that we sell one to our customers, is that whey protein can often cause people some digestive discomfort.

Its certainly not uncommon to experience a lot of gas or wind after drinking a whey protein powder.

That can be for many reasons poor quality ingredients being one – but also because of the fact that many people simply dont do very well with dairy and dont digest it as effectively as they need to.

For some, this can lead to a range of symptoms.

Its also worth being mindful of the fact that it is possible to build up a sensitivity to something if you consume it too often and thats especially the case with animal-based products. Therefore, even if you can drink a whey protein, you dont want to have it too often, and incorporating a vegan protein into your diet too can be beneficial.

How To Choose The Right Protein Powder For You

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the right protein powder. Its helpful to discuss with a doctor or registered dietician to discuss how much protein you may need.

Here are some questions to consider when determining the best protein powder for you:

  • Is the protein source whey or plant-based?
  • Does it have artificial sweeteners or additives?
  • What else in the list of ingredients?
  • Does it have any other vitamins or minerals?
  • How much protein is in one serving?
  • Does this match my health needs?

Protein Digestibility Of Plant Vs Animal Protein

It is also important to take into account protein absorption, and in turn, biological value. This is a measure of how much of the protein you consume from a food can be readily used for functions within your body.

Experts assess a protein food’s value by using the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score, or PDCASS. They determine this number by calculating the total protein consumed and then determining nitrogen intake versus fecal excretion. The higher amount of nitrogen retained compared to what’s excreted through your waste is associated with a higher biological value for that given food.

  • Animal based products, including dairy, meat, fish, eggs, and poultry have a high biological value.
  • Plant-based proteins, like legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds have a lower biological value. Again, this relates to missing essential amino acids.

While low biological value sounds like a negative for plant protein, consuming adequate amounts of total protein, and pairing the right plant proteins together can offset this down side.

What Is Plant Protein

Plant protein is derived from soy, brown rice, pea, pumpkin, hemp, chia, and many other types of plants! Many times you will also find that these powders contain a blend of different plant proteins such as a pea and rice protein mix.

If you are vegan or dairy free, plant protein powder is your friend! It promotes muscle growth, is nutrient dense and high in fiber as well!

There have also been studies done showing a significant improvement of postmenopaul symptoms in women who have a high soy protein consumption. As well have improved arterial health, decreased cholesterol levels, and an increase in prostate health for men.

What Is Pea Protein

Pea protein is a plant-based protein harvested from yellow split peas. The protein extraction process involves 2 phases, a dry and liquid phase.

  • Dry – In the dry phase, the peas are dried and then ground into a fine flour-like powder containing protein, starch, & fiber.
  • Liquid – In the liquid phase, the powder is mixed with water to separate the fiber and starch.
  • Like whey, pea protein is also available in both concentrate and isolate. The additional processing in isolate results in the highest protein concentration relative to pea protein concentrate, which comes with more starch & fiber.

    Even Out The Playing Field

When it comes to the whey vs vegan protein debate, arguably the key difference comes down to protein quality. Theres no question whey is considered a higher quality protein than individual plant-based sources because: 1. Its higher in essential amino acids and 2. The protein tends to be more digestible and bioavailable.

And the beauty of this is that knowing why plant proteins are inferior provides the very clues we need to even out the playing field if youre leaning toward a plant-based protein supplement. In fact, despite the apparent superiority of whey vs vegan protein, there are several simple strategies that can boost the quality and effectiveness of plant-based proteins:

  • Eat more. We can close the quality gap by consuming larger doses of vegan protein sources, which would supply greater amounts of the key building blocks . For example, in a study published in the Nutrition Journal, researchers found that young men who supplemented with 48 grams of rice protein per day for 8 weeks combined with 3 days per week of strength training experienced similar improvements in body composition and exercise performance as young men who supplemented with 48 grams of whey protein.6 This study provides evidence the differences in protein quality can be offset when enough plant-based protein is consumed .
