The Healthiest Breakfast Cereals Ranked By Nutritionists
Though cereal is certainly appealing for its quick and easy preparation, sorting through the multitudes of options at grocery aisles can be a tricky task if youre looking for something healthy. Its a good rule of thumb to steer clear of artificially colored cereals with cartoon characters on the box, but other seemingly nutritious brands tout misleading claims of wholesome ingredients and other health benefits, concealing some not-so-great qualities, such as excessive added sugar.
We chatted with two nutritionists to get some clarity on what makes for a healthy cereal, and asked them to rank the nations most popular varieties.
Here are Americas nine top-selling cereals, according to 2017 figures from Chicago-based data firm IRI:

Top it with a protein drink. Skip the milk altogether and pour a ready-made protein drink over cereal instead. My favorite is ICONIC, but there are plenty of options on shelves. Just read the labels carefully.
Ancient Harvest Quinoa Flakes
Although usually served as a lunch or dinner item, quinoa can also be used to make a comforting, nutritious, and hearty hot breakfast cereal.
Much like oatmeal, Ancient Harvests quinoa flakes are shelf stable and cook quickly, but theyre made exclusively from organic white quinoa.
A 1/2-cup serving provides approximately 5 grams of fiber, 9 grams of protein, and 0 grams of added sugar.
Note the manufacturer recommends a serving size of 1/3 cup . Ancient Harvests quinoa flakes are labeled gluten-free but not certified gluten-free by a third-party organization.
One major drawback of most breakfast cereals is their relatively low protein content.
If youre looking for a convenient cereal that contains higher than average amounts of protein, Erin Bakers Ultra Protein Granola is worth a try.
It packs 10 grams of plant-based protein in each 1/2-cup serving, alongside 4 grams of fiber and just 7 grams of sugar.

Can Chickens Eat Ordinary Cheerios
Cheerios are healthy breakfast cereal, thats why chickens are allowed to eat it. However, when feeding cheerios to your chicken, you should be cautious about the amount youll be giving them. Breakfast cereals are made with a high starch content that humans need, which may seem a lot for a regular chick. Here are some restrictions on how to feed cheerios to your chicken.
Cspi Sues General Mills Citing Misleading Labeling And False Advertising
General Mills markets Cheerios Protein, a cereal ostensibly much higher in protein than its original Cheerios. But according to a class action lawsuit filed today, Cheerios Protein has just a smidgen more protein than original Cheerios.
The nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest and private law firms filed the suit charging that General Mills falsely markets Cheerios Protein as a high-protein alternative to Cheerios, when in fact the main thing that distinguishes Cheerios Protein from Cheerios is that the former has 17 times as much sugar.
Cheerios Protein boasts on the front of its box that it has 11 grams of protein four of those grams come from the milk, leaving seven grams from the cereal. Original Cheerios has three grams of protein. That four gram difference represents a small amount of protein just five percent of the average Americans intake. But much of that difference is attributable to differences in serving sizes. Cheerios Protein has a bigger, 55-gram serving size, whereas Cheerios uses a 27-gram serving size. Two ounces of each cereal have just about the same amount of protein.
And for a cereal with only a bit more protein but a lot more sugar, General Mills is charging a premium: Consumers pay about 70 cents more per box at stores like Walmart, Giant Foods, and Safeway.

How Many Varieties Of Cheerios Are There
Cheerios come in an assortment of flavors. In fact, there are at least 15 varieties with seasonal ones appearing on occasion.
Most are made from a base of whole grain oats, but some varieties include other grains, added sugars, and extra ingredients.
Some of the most popular Cheerios flavors are:
- Plain. These are the original Cheerios and most basic option. The first ingredient is oats. They contain just 1 gram of added sugar and no extra flavorings.
- Honey Nut. One of the top selling varieties, these are sweetened with sugar and honey, plus a hint of almond flavor.
- Chocolate. This kind is made from corn and oats, as well as cocoa powder and sugar.
- Apple Cinnamon. Made primarily of whole grain oats and sugar, this type also includes apple purée and cinnamon.
- Frosted. Made with whole grain oats and cornmeal, these are sweetened with a vanilla flavored sugar coating.
- Multigrain. This variety combines whole grain oats, corn, and brown rice. Its sweetened with slightly less sugar than other varieties.
- Ancient Grains. This type is sugar-sweetened and made from whole grain oats, quinoa, and rice.
You may notice that many of the flavored Cheerios varieties harbor added sugar. If youre trying to reduce your sugar intake, its best to limit your intake of the sugary flavors or simply opt for the plain variety.
Cheerios are available in a wide variety of flavors. While most comprise a base of whole grain oats, some include extra ingredients like added sugar.

Heres What Our Nutritionists Look For In A Healthy Cereal
I like to recommend shopping for whole grain options, Amy Gorin, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in New York, told HuffPost. You can take a look at the ingredients list of the cereal to check that the first ingredient is a whole grain. That ingredient might be whole wheat, oats, cornmeal or another whole grain.
Gorin added that ample fiber , some protein and a conservative amount of sugar is also ideal. Protein and fiber help keep you fuller for longer, and we should try and limit our intake of added sugar, she said.
Jonathan Valdez, owner of Genki Nutrition and media rep for the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, recommended checking out the total carbohydrates as well, ideally 45-60 grams per meal, to make sure you have enough energy to power through the morning.
Calories In Cheerios With Milk
3/4 cup of cereal and 1/2 cup milk equals one serving size and approximately 170 calories. This amount of cereal fits nicely into a fruit bowl. Unfortunately, most people use a soup bowl which holds about 3 servings. If you have two bowls of cereal in a soup bowl you are actually eating 6 servings and more than 750 calories.

The #1 Best Cereal For Weight Loss Dietitian Says
It’s natural to believe that simply avoiding the old-school, sugar-coated, candy-colored cereals popular in decades past is a smart way to steer toward something healthier. But when it comes to healthy cereal, it’s easy to be deceived.
In my 30 years as a dietitian, virtually all of my clients have been hoodwinked into thinking that seeking out a cereal package with phrases like “Multi-grain,” “With real fruit!” or “Low sugar” means they’re choosing a weight loss-friendly cereal. However, when I put cold cereal nutrition facts in perspective for them, it’s often an a-ha moment.
If you’re like many of the people I’ve worked with, cereal can be super confusing because when it’s high in healthy content , it’s often also high in something less healthy, like sugar. So there’s rarely a strict good or bad choice.
To make it easier for you to navigate the cereal aisle, especially if you’re interested in trimming down, I’ve analyzed nutrition information from major cereal brands that are to be the healthiest. If your goal is weight lossor even if you want to keep your sugar consumption in checkyou’ll probably find this scoop on popular boxes enlightening.
Keep reading for the truth about popular “healthy” cereals and what they’re really doing for your weight-loss goals. And, for more food insight likely to make you think, read The #1 Worst Drink for Your Liver, New Study Says.

Whats The Debate About
The debate has to do with the testing, and Tricia Thompson of Gluten-Free Watchdog is our advocate in this. According to Tricia, who traveled to General Mills, GM is reporting a lot mean by combining 12 to 18 boxes of cereal, grinding them together and testing the results.
And when they shared extraction values with Tricia, it revealed that while most extractions were under 20 ppm, some were above 20 ppm.
Gluten Dude also visited General Mills and they sent him an email in response to the concerns expressed by Tricia. While they cited numbers well below 20 ppm, they were again citing mean results.
The problem with mean values is that any samples that are over 20 ppm are getting diluted by the lower value samples. That works for some things, but not for people who need to avoid gluten 100% of the time.
Tricia Thompson says,
Based on extraction values shared with me I am not fully confident that every box of Yellow Box Cheerios from the 88 lots produced at the time of my visit to General Mills contains a level of gluten less than 20 parts per million.
And that is where the debate is centered. Some believe that every box should test to less than 20 ppm gluten. Not an average.
Can Baby Chickens Eat Cheerios
While Cheerios are a good snack for chickens, I wouldnt say the same for baby chickens or chicks. The first reason is that it may be hard to digest for chicks so you would need to break each cereal into half. And if youre trying to feed them only as a snack, breaking them in half will take some time only for them to eat it in a few minutes.
Second, your chicks are growing fast to become egg-laying chickens in the future and they would need all the nutrients that they can get from healthy foods. The sugar and carbohydrates in Cheerios are not exactly a great feature, especially for chicks. Its more recommended to feed them chopped fruits and vegetables so they can get the right nutrients they need to grow.
Lastly, keep in mind that all the nutrients and minerals in this breakfast cereal are overwhelming enough for a grown chicken, just imagine how a baby chick would be. Too many nutrients and minerals can also be very bad for their health. Find a balanced diet that will assure their proper growth.
