Natural sources of protein should always be your first choice during pregnancy. Not all protein powders on the market are safe for pregnancy. If you want to try protein supplements, you should stick to protein powders with DHA and other nutrition. As they often provide essential vitamins and minerals for pregnancy.

As far as safety is a worry, our recommended protein powders are safe for pregnancy. We still recommend that you take a look at the labels first and talk to your obstetrician if you have any questions.

How Much Protein Should A Pregnant Woman Get

The minimum recommended daily allowance of protein for healthy adults is 50 grams per day.

In general, most people are able to get this number fairly easily.

But during pregnancy, its a good idea to get more than 50 grams a day to help support the growth of your baby.

As you could imagine, protein needs increase throughout the pregnancy.

So how much should you get?

One study recommends eating up to 0.7g of protein per pound of bodyweight.

That means that a 135lb woman should consume up to 85 grams of protein per day, by the time she reaches the third trimester.

The National Academy of Medicine on the other hand recommends a dietary reference intake for pregnant women of 1.1 g/kg/day protein, which is about 0.5 g of protein, per pound of bodyweight.

Using the same 135lb woman again, thats about 65 grams of protein per day.

So if you struggle to get at least 0.5 g of protein per pound of body weight, talk with your doctor to see if supplementation is right for you.

To Protein Powder Or Not To Protein Powder

Protein powders can help you meet your protein needs during pregnancy. But talk to your OB before you add any kind of supplement to your diet including protein powders.

Once you have the go-ahead, ask your doctor what protein powder they recommend. As with any kind of food supplement, its best to look for a unflavored variety with very few ingredients. A good rule of thumb: If you cant pronounce it, dont eat it.

Whey powder is a natural protein powder thats made from milk. Look for pure whey powder that has no added ingredients.

But if youre allergic or sensitive to dairy, make sure youre not taking a milk-based dairy powder. The last thing you want during pregnancy is unnecessary bloating and gas or an allergic reaction.

In addition to avoiding whey, carefully check protein powder labels for milk ingredients like casein or lactose. Your best bet is to reach for a pure pea protein powder instead.

7 Best Protein Powders for Pregnancy (2020)

Generally, most doctors will recommend that you avoid any dietary supplements during pregnancy, with certain exceptions, like a prenatal vitamin.

The reason is not because dietary supplements, like protein powder, are necessarily harmful, but that the supplement industry doesnt require the high scrutiny a mother needs for a growing baby.

Advice from an expert:

When you look into supplementing your diet during pregnancy, it is important to keep in mind that dietary supplements do not need to be approved by the FDA prior to selling, and so may not contain the highest quality ingredients. You need to research the supplements you plan to take thoroughly and always defer to the opinion of your doctor.

A good practice when evaluating a protein powder or any supplemental product is to choose ones that have been third-party tested by an unbiased body. This can indicate that the product has been tested for quality, purity, and safety and is free from contaminants in potentially harmful amounts.

So, when you ask your doctor if you should use whey protein during pregnancy, keep in mind that all products are not created equal. Therefore, it is simply easier for the advice to just be dont use supplements and then each doctor can discuss supplementation with patients on an individual basis.

But, here are a few things that we do know about whey protein during pregnancy.

Proteins Role During Pregnancy

A report in Food and Nutrition Research describes a mothers diet as one of the most important factors in the healthy growth and development of a fetus. A pregnant woman has increased needs for several nutrients, including folic acid and iron, but protein may be especially important for delivering a baby at a healthy birth weight.

When your baby is developing, your body uses the amino acids from the protein you eat to create proteins in the body, like keratin and collagen, that are important for healthy bones, skin, joints, tendons and ligaments.

Dietary protein is also used to create functional proteins, such as enzymes, hormones and transport proteins, that work together to promote proper development and provide the developing fetus with the nutrients it needs to grow.

If you dont get enough protein in your diet, the developing fetus wont have access to the proper amounts of the amino acids it needs. In the early stages of your pregnancy, protein needs arent that much higher than if you werent pregnant, but as you get into the later stages , the babys growth starts to speed up and protein needs increase.

Prior to taking protein powder, both pregnant women and parents of young children should consult a physician to be sure the protein powder is right for them.
