As a health coach, I am all for getting your vitamins and nutrients from real, whole foods. But as a busy human being, I am also about convenience. Therefore its not uncommon to see me grabbing a protein bar out of my bag between appointments. I have tried hundreds of protein bars over the years. Some delicious and some so disgusting that they got thrown out after one bite. Some super healthy, and some that were more like a protein packed candy bar. With all of these different bars on the market, I realize just how confusing it can be. So I decided to make a list of my top five healthy protein bars:

Protein bars can be a very beneficial healthy and quick option when you are on the go but not all protein bars are created equal and so we have a few tips below to help you navigate your choice
Pay attention to serving size If you are eating this bar as a snack in between meals then it should be around 30g of carbs, 7g of protein and 5g of fiber. Maybe if you are eating a bar that is higher in these things you cut it in half!
Watch for HIGH fiber Of course fiber is good for us and it helps to keep us regular but be careful of high fiber protein bars because they can cause GI distress, you are better off getting your fiber through real whole foods.
What is the fat source? You want to make sure the fat source in your protein bar is recognizable. A few great examples of GOOD fat sources are almonds, cashews and pumpkin seeds to name a few.

Should You Eat Protein Bars Every Day
Even though protein bars have their perks, you dont need to eat them every day. Some of the protein bars are also made with too much of the highly processed plant oils like canola, palm, soybean, and peanut, which makes them unhealthy.
If you think about it, you might find that you are already consuming too much protein than you need, meaning that the protein bars are not really helping but making things worse.
Experts now note that eating too much protein in the diet, this is more than 0.36g/ pound of your body weight, is quite unhealthy, and it may increase your risk of cancer, liver, kidney, bone, and heart diseases.
So, unless you are very active, for example, if you strength train vigorously each day, you may not need the protein intake level exceeding 1.5g/pound of your body weight.
Finally, some of the protein bars are overpriced, and they dont offer half the benefits they promise, you might be better off sticking to proteins from your meals.
To determine if you need the protein bars, wed recommend weighing the ingredients, nutrients in the protein bars against your values and goals, then choose the option that offers the best benefits.

Is It Ok To Eat A Protein Bar Even If You Didnt Work Out
What is even inside those wrappers, anyway?
Protein bars are the ultimate dude-bro snack in one aisle and the best skinny snack in the next. The only thing thats clear from all that marketing is that protein bars have been giving us mixed messages for a really long time.
And to be honest, behind all the flashy ads, the products really do vary. Some are made with animal proteins, while some are vegan some are dead set on keeping the ingredient count as low as possible, while others are fluffed up with mineral additives and superfoods.
No two protein bars are really the same. But what they do have in common is that they A) contain protein, and B) are lauded as a healthy snack option for after your workout.
But lets say, for arguments sake, that you didnt work out today. Are they still a healthy snack?
