Best Shake For Older Adults

BOOST® High Protein Complete Nutritional Drink

Older adults are at risk of malnutrition, which might be caused or worsened by poor appetite, chewing problems, dry mouth, and a decline in sense of smell, among other things .

Therefore, a common strategy to improve their nutritional status is to provide them with small, tasty, nutrient- and protein-rich meals .

As nutritional supplements specially designed for adults, both Ensure and Boost may help cover older adults increased nutritional needs.

Boost Original Complete Nutritional Drink Benefits & Effectiveness

So lets start with the prebiotic fiber. Considered as food for the bacteria living in your digestive tract, prebiotic fiber may improve digestive health and Boost advertises their product as containing Prebio1 Fiber Blend, which they call

a proprietary blend of prebiotic fibers to help promote the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria to support digestive health.

Theres not much information about Prebio1, which seems to be used only in Nestle products. Its likely that it provides a little boost to digestive health but since we dont know how much prebiotic fiber a drink contains nor is there in any case a recommended daily intake for prebiotics, its hard to know how useful the Prebio1 is, but the 3 grams of fiber in each bottle do provide 12 percent of the RDI of fiber.

While were talking about carbs, this has a 1:4 ratio of protein to carbs and on top of that, Boost isnt low in sugar. Twenty grams in a bottle is pretty considerable, though the flipside of that is there are no artificial sweeteners, which some folks will be happy about.

In any case, this does have a ton of nutrients and with the ratio of protein to carbs, I can definitely see it being useful as a post-workout beverage or an anytime snack for active individuals.

Both Ensure and Boost products are intended and designed for adults.

In fact, Abbott Nutrition has other product lines intended for infants, kids, and teens including EleCare, Similac, and Pediasure .

The same goes for Nestlé, which has the following brands intended for children: Alfamino, Althéra, Alfaré, Garden of Life, Modulen, Peptamen, and Vitaflo .

Therefore, its best to look for an alternative among those brands to find a product that fits your childs needs.

Ensure and Boost have multiple ready-to-drink shakes that may help you increase your protein intake, gain weight, and manage diabetes. Both are also a good choice for older adults. However, theyre not designed for children.

Both Ensure and Boost shakes may cause side effects, such as constipation, nausea, and flatulence. However, user reports indicate that most of them go away when consumed consistently.

Other reported side effects include muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, and shortness of breath.

When it comes to the use of common blood-thinning drugs like Warfarin among older adults, it would be best to avoid either brands products, as most of them pack over 20% of the RDI for vitamin K (

Nutritional Needs Of Older Adults

A low-fat, low-calorie diet is recommended for the general population to maintain a healthy weight, but the opposite is usually recommended for seniorsespecially those who are frail or unintentionally losing weight. Sometimes Ill see patients in their eighties and nineties who are losing weight and still restricting their calorie and fat intake. In many cases, it would actually be better for them to just eat a bowl of ice cream!

Keep in mind that eating three large meals each day can be overwhelming for seniors. Instead, encourage them to consume smaller, more frequent meals and snacks, even before bedtime. Petite portions are less intimidating for many older individuals.

Elders who have experienced weight loss should eat what they likewithin reason. Dont be afraid to incorporate eggs, cheese, peanut butter and even treats like ice cream into their diet. There is usually no need for low-fat dairy products. If foods in liquid form are easier for them to consume, try making your own healthy smoothies or shakes with wholesome, fresh ingredients. Seniors tend to prefer sweets as their senses of taste and smell dull, but it is easy to hide high-calorie and nutrient-dense foods in smoothies and still have them taste sweet and delicious. Try adding a spoonful of nut butter, half an avocado or a handful of spinach to a blended drink for a boost of nutrients.

What About Protein Powders

This post has only focused on pre-prepared protein drinks.

These arent your only choice. Youll also see protein powders. With these, youll be making the shake yourself, by adding some type of liquid and possibly other ingredients.

  • Some of these are designed as meal replacements. They contain a variety of extra nutrients .
  • Others just emphasize the protein. This can sometimes be better, giving you precise control over the final nutrient profile.

Once again, you should pay close attention to the product. Look for powders that have few artificial ingredients and match your family members needs.

Here are a few interesting products to consider:

Ensure Enlive Nutrition Shake

  • Flavors: Milk Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry
  • Nutrition Facts: 350 calories, 11g fat, 20g protein, 22g sugar.
  • Reviews: Most reviews are positive. However, some people mention that the taste is okay, not amazing. The shake can also be hard to find and expensive at stores.
  • Personal Perspective: 22g of sugar isnt appealing and is a major limitation of the product. The higher protein content helps balance this somewhat.

Best Shake When It Comes To Protein

Together they provide your body with energy, but they also possess specific functions. For instance, proteins are the building blocks of the body, and as such, they help build muscle, among other things.

Its RDI is 0.36 grams per pound of body weight .

Both Ensure and Boost shakes may help you increase your daily protein intake. Adding their products to your diet may provide you an additional 930 grams of protein, depending on which shake you choose.

Glucerna Vs Boost Vs Ensure

By riquelskyy Latest Reply2017-02-06 07:00:39 -0600 Which is better? Or does it depend on how it effects your blood sugar? By far Glucerna has least amount of sugar at 5g but Boost also has 5g but also haz 11g more protein. So Boost is the Winner. Ensure is out! Ic u add Atkins to the discussion then that is ths winner with only 1g sugar, 15g protein, and 1 g net carb its funny none of you answered thd question. Its like the saying People dont listen to understand they listen to reply. Everyone gave answerc to what they take or would but nobody answered which of the 3 in the question is better. hahaha Isopure was recommended by my gastric bypass doctor for the protein. You can get it powder form or ready made. I mix either with sugar-free fruit drinks to “spice” up the taste. GNC cares them. I looked up the nutrition labels at the sites James recommended and most have a lot more carbs than my system could handle. I used to use Atkins and EAS low carb protein shakes. They only have 2 net carbs per serving and either one didnt spike my blood sugar. I now use the EAS protein powder shake. One scoop and add water or soy or nut milk and drink. I found the powder was a lot cheaper than the ready mixes. The one I use has just 2 net carbs per serving. Been using them at breakfast for over 2 years now. I have to use low carb nut milk or soy milk because milk is a high carb drink. I found water works pretty good and doesnt add any carbs.Continue reading > >

    Alternative Option To Nutrition Drinks

A potentially healthier option is a shake or fruit smoothie that is food-based and found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. “These tend to have minimum added sugars and are less processed, and they should not contain excessive amounts of vitamins and minerals, herbs, or other unnecessary supplemental ingredients,” Nelson explains. She recommends trying products such as Odwalla Super Protein, Naked Juice Protein Zone, and Bolthouse Farms Protein Plus. However, these tend to cost more than the shelf-stable shakes.
