When I became a vegetarian in high school, I initially relied on energy bars as a convenient way to replace protein from meat.

Recently, Ive started to make my own because I prefer bars made with sugar over erythritol or monk fruit and have been seeing fewer of those options available .

A Healthier Granola Bar Option

Just because thees bars are homemade doesnt mean they cant be protein-rich! Were revving up the protein in these bars by including Vanilla protein powder . Any brand will do!

Throughout this recipe we also made some ingredient swaps to make this bar overall more whole and nutrient-rich than the processed versions youd find in the grocery store.

Oat flour is a wonderful alternative to white flour. It includes more protein and fiber and comes with a lower carbohydrate count.

Natural peanut butterWhenever I use nut butters, I always go for the all-natural options. The chemicals and preservatives present in processed versions are simply not worth it. If your grocery store carries it, all-natural is the way to go!

I used coconut oil in this recipe in place of alternatives like canola and vegetable oil. Coconut oil is known to be more nutrient-rich and a healthier fat than the former.

Do Protein Bars Make You Poop

Certain store-bought protein bars have a reputation for making you clutch your stomach or run to the bathroom because they contain ingredients known to cause GI discomfort, such as added fiber and sugar alcohols.

Fiber is wonderful, but the high concentrations of added fiber that some bars contain is a lot for your system to handle at once, as SELF has reported, especially if you arent used to such amounts. This can cause issues like gas, bloating, cramping, and yes, pooping.

The other main culpritpopular in low-sugar, sugar-free, or low-calorie protein barsis sugar alcohols. While everybodys tolerance for the type and amount of sugar alcohols they can consume before experiencing GI issues is a little different, as SELF has explained, they can cause gas, stomach pain, and diarrhea for plenty of people.
