Its a quick and easy way to start your day, and tastes a bit like drinking a muffin! Youll feel really satisfied with this as your breakfast and can avoid those mid-morning hunger pangs.

Use this recipe as a jumping point to make your own delicious oatmeal smoothie creations. Some of my favorite combinations include adding 1 frozen banana, a scoop of PB2 or peanut butter, and a scoop of unsweetened cocoa powder for some chocolate banana peanut butter action. I also love adding 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 cup berries, 1 cup spinach, and some flax or chia seeds.

If youre a gym lover, heres a good after workout smoothie for you. Health-wise I prefer vegan, organic protein powders, but some of those taste pretty awful .

Whey protein can be a good alternative when youre looking to gain some lean muscle mass. The healthiest is organic, grass-fed whey protein powder.

Protein is also important when youre looking to lose weight. If youre on a restricted diet and dont get enough protein your body is more likely to lose muscles instead of burning fat.

If youre not a fan of protein powders, but still want to add protein to your smoothies, there are natural alternatives. Try to add plant-based protein sources like nuts, seeds, or even leafy greens instead. Believe it or not, protein accounts for 30% of spinachs calories!

What Can I Mix With Oatmeal

The good thing about oats is that it is a versatile food that goes well with a number of other pairings. While being one of the healthiest breakfast items on planet earth, it also is quick to prepare, cheap and is packed with a number of important and vital nutrients.

However, eating the same bland preparation of oats day in and day out could be boring and underwhelming. Hence, we are happy to have a look at some of the oatmeal toppings that could make it more enjoyable, tasty and of course filling and nutritious.

Drizzle your Chai. You could make use of a pre-mixed concentrate such as Dona Chai and this will help create aromatic and nuanced oats.

You also could replace your conventional cooking liquid with herbal tea and this will certainly increase the flavor and give that tasty and appetizing perfumed flavor.

If you want to add some grainy element to it, you could think of amaranth, buckwheat and millet. You also could pair it with sweet potatoes or homemade applesauce, this will add taste to it apart from giving that special and unique creamy punch.

Many people add clarified butter, also known as Ghee. This does improve the taste quite considerably.

You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to adding other ingredients to make oatmeal tastier and perhaps even more nutritious.

Fried egg and crispy bacon drizzled with maple syrup is a beautiful combination that will surely enhance the amount of protein in you oatmeal dish.

Best Protein Powder To Use In Oatmeal

The best protein powder for oats is the one with a flavor you can enjoy. I use several protein powders and even have a post on protein powder benefits, everything from whey to plant-based.

Personally, I like the way whey and pea protein work in this recipe both give it a hearty texture, and Ive found flavors that make the kitchen and my bowl of oats smell like a vanilla cake!

Here are a few protein powder options that are super versatile for this recipe, smoothies and protein pancakes.

Another honorable mention is Great Lakes Hydrolyzed Collagen. It has no flavor and doesnt give as thick a texture to the oats compared to whey and pea protein, but it still adds a good 15 grams of protein and collagen thats oh so good for our joints, skin, and nails.

    Type Of Protein To Use

    Easy High Protein Oatmeal Recipe

When choosing the protein powder for proats, it comes down to two factors flavor and texture.

For flavor, my go-to is chocolate, but you can experiment with the huge variety of other flavors out there. Especially when you start adding other ingredients.

As far as texture, it depends on personal preference. However, Ive found that micronized protein powders make a thinner, almost runny oatmeal. While larger particle sizes give you thicker, fluffier oatmeal, which is better in my opinion.

For that reason, I use Body Fortress Whey Protein. This is a lower quality protein that I wouldnt use for shakes, but it gives a great texture and flavor to your proats.

    What Youll Need:

    • 1 lime, peeled

    How to Prepare:

Peel the banana and lemon. Add everything to your blender and blend for 1-2 minutes depending on the strength of your blender. Add some ice to make this smoothie more refreshing.

Tips To Make The Best Oatmeal Smoothie

    • Oatmeal smoothies are incredibly forgiving. If your smoothie is too thick, continue to add more milk until your preferred texture.
    • For ultra-thick smoothies, you can add some ice.
    • If youd like a richer flavor, use canned coconut milk instead of the carton variety.
    • You can also use quick cooking oats if you dont have rolled oats. I prefer the rolled kind as they have more staying power.

    Difference Between Oatmeal Varieties

HOW TO MAKE: A Protein Shake with Oats, Banana, Milk, Whey Protein Powder / Muscle Building Meal

If youre standing in front of your grocery shelf, youll find a wide range of different oatmeal varieties. Ill shortly explain the different varieties and tell you which type I prefer using in weight loss smoothies.

The main difference between the three varieties is how much the oat groat has been processed. This gives them different textures and health benefits as well.

Instant Oats -Youve probably grown up with Quacker. Instant oats are also known as quick oats. This variety is the most processed of the three varieties. They are cooked, dried, and then pressed. Quick oats, as the name suggests, require less cooking time than other varieties. They should also be the least desirable when it comes to nutritional content and health benefits. Theyre thinner and have a softer texture than rolled oats. Their taste is mild and they work out well in smoothies.

Steel-Cut Oats These oats are sometimes referred to as Scottish oats or Irish oats. Theyre less processed than rolled oats. Although all oats varieties are healthy, steel-cut oats are the least processed and therefore healthiest oat variety out there. They have a chewy consistency and take longer to cook. Steel-cut oats almost look like rice. If you want to use them for smoothies, its best to soak them beforehand.

Now that we know the difference between the most common oatmeal types, its about time for some delicious smoothie recipes.

Because smoothies are all the rage in my house right now. Whats for breakfast? SMOOTHIES. What kind of smoothies? Strawberry Banana Oatmeal Protein Smoothie. Thats a mouthful of words, isnt it?

The smoothies that I bring into this world rarely contain dairy. First, milk is my stomachs arch nemesis. My stomach and milk have duked it out many times. As a result, milk often wins the battle and I end up with a stomach ache. However, if I utilize the Lactaid super power, Im usually okay with milk. Lactaid helps me destroy milks evil, destructive digestive destroyer lactose. BUT, I dont really like taking lactaid.

And I dont like nasty battles, so I play it safe and make non-dairy smoothies.

If milk is your arch nemesis too, then this smoothie is your new best friend. I made this Strawberry Banana Oatmeal Protein Smoothie with Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Vanilla Almond Milk with a hint of honey. No lactose. Nada. None. Zilch.
