How Much Protein In Halo Top

How Much Protein Should We Be Eating

Halo Top Ice Cream Taste Test | high protein, low calorie low fat

None of this is to address exactly why we suddenly want it so much. Of course, successive popular eating plans from Atkins to Dukan and, more recently, the Paleo diet have been teaching us to prioritise protein for the last two decades. And while weve always been careful not to use the word diet itself, this very magazine has promoted the nutritional benefits of protein since its inception.

According to Dr Mayur Ranchordas, a senior lecturer and sports nutrition consultant at Sheffield Hallam University, this fixation could be due to a process of elimination. The key message nowadays is to reduce the amount of carbs we eat, and for a long time we were told not to eat fat, either, he says. So protein is the only macronutrient left to fill the gap.

But Ranchordas is also quick to lay responsibility with social media for the recently accelerated shift, citing the wellness influencers who share their workout and refuel snaps on Instagram. Protein supplementation is no longer the preserve of overmuscled bench-pressers. Body fuel has been lifestylised.

So how much of it do we need and how much of it are we already eating?

You May Not Feel As Satisfied

Enlightened, which is marketed as ice cream that’s good for you, is similar to Halo Top. The product’s makers start with skim milk and add milk protein isolate , fiber, erythritol, and monk fruit extractanother natural, no-calorie sweetener that has become popular alongside stevia. The macro-nutrient numbers are pretty similar to Halo Top’s. Its worth mentioning that like stevia, monk fruit extract is 150 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. Anecdotally, some of my clients find that the intense sweetness actually stokes their sweet tooth, rather than satisfying it. And some say they dont like the aftertaste.

Got Halo Top Just Eat The Real Ice Cream Says One Dietitian

People keep asking me if Halo Top ice cream is healthy. Halo Top, is low-calorie light ice cream that claims to be healthier than regular ice cream because of their pint’s low-calorie count and slightly higher protein content. But is Halo Top actually better for you?

Let me just say that I love ice cream. Going out for a cone is a weekly summer activity and there’s usually a pint or two in my freezer . There’s no denying that Halo Top is much lower in calories than most ice creams. There are between 240 and 360 calories per pint of Halo Top, whereas premium ice creams, like Ben & Jerry’s, have that many calories in just 1/2 cup .

We Tried All 7 Flavors Of Halo Top Low

Holy sweetness, you guys. We finally got to try Halo Top ice cream the protein-rich, low-sugar, low-carb, low-fat frozen goodness that we’ve had our eye on for months and it didn’t disappoint.

A quick nutritional breakdown of Halo Top flavors: an entire pint has between 240 and 280 calories, depending on the flavor, with each flavor offering 24 grams of protein per pint. By comparison, a pint of vanilla Haagen Dazs ice cream has 1,000 calories same with Ben & Jerry’s.

In each serving of Halo Top, you’ll get 6 grams of protein per serving, 20 percent of your daily fiber intake, and only 4 or 5 grams of sugar. In Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s, you’ll get 4 grams of protein, zero fiber, and about 20 grams of sugar.

We’ve tried healthy ice creams before, and to be perfectly honest, sometimes they just don’t live up to the real thing you’re left unsatisfied and a little annoyed you didn’t just let yourself have a scoop of regular ice cream. NOT the case with Halo Top, which for all intents and purposes, is just like regular ice cream. Here’s how we know . . .

The result? When they found out, they were shocked. There was a whole lot of “Love!” and “Delicious!” and “Yummy!” in our taste test notes. Let’s look at the definitive ranking of all seven flavors.

Are We All Consuming Too Much Protein

Protein has become the sexiest, most ubiquitous and most lucrative nutrient around, but is it worth the hype?

The change happened quietly, albeit suddenly. Once the chalky preserve of sweatbox changing rooms and elite sportsmens kitbags, protein has become the sexiest, most ubiquitous and most lucrative nutrient around.

Between 2010 and 2015, the number of new food products claiming to be high-protein rose almost 500 per cent, according to market research group Mintel. And with one in four Britons already consuming sports supplements regularly recently rising to an alleged 42 per cent of men aged 16 to 24 its clear we just cant get enough of it.

Protein supplements are no longer the preserve of overmuscled bench-pressers

Of course, we expect to find whey in our post-gym shakes and bars. Youve doubtless used them yourself, whether looking to build and sustain muscle or simply recover faster from your workouts. But this relatively niche market has breached its banks. Its appeal is blowing up. Yoghurt brands such as Arla heavily market their protein content. Weetabix On The Go calls itself a protein breakfast drink. Even Marks & Spencers Balanced For You ready meals promote their high levels of the muscle macro.

What Is Halo Top And How Is It Low In Calories

Protein Ice Cream Review: Halo Top and More

Halo Top is a low-calorie, low-fat, and low-sugar ice cream.

The company, founded by Justin Woolverton, states the product started as a way to enjoy ice cream as a regular part of our diets, with just 280-360 calories per pint.

If you look at the ingredient list of most flavors, youll find its fairly natural with ingredients such as skim milk, eggs, cream, erythritol, organic cane sugar, milk protein concentrate, high-fat cocoa, vegetable glycerin, prebiotic fiber, sea salt, organic carob gum, organic guar gum, and organic stevia leaf extract.

Halo Top Versus Regular Ice Cream And Frozen Yogurt

The serving size for Halo Top and regular ice cream is the same: ½ cup. But while a serving of Halo Top will have 60 to 90 calories, regular ice cream and frozen yogurt is usually in the 200- to 330-calorie range.

You are also looking at a large differential in sugars, because Halo Top uses sugar substitutes and regular sugar as sweeteners as opposed to just sugar alone, Mass says. Halo Top usually has about 5 grams of sugar per serving, while regular ice cream can have as much as 22 g.

Halo Tops protein comes from milk, eggs, and milk protein concentrate. But the protein count of around 5 g per ½ cup is on par with what youd expect to find in regular ice cream. The other big difference is weight: Halo Top is noticeably lighter than other ice creams Time notes that a pint of Halo Top weighs 256 g versus 428 g for Ben & Jerrys.

How Is Halo Top So Low In Sugar

Halo Top uses just a little real sugar and then increases sweetness by using erythritol and stevia, which are both almost zero-calorie but natural sweeteners.

What really surprised me was that I could detect zero aftertaste which is usually typical for non-nutritive sweeteners. This is a win for me as I just wont choose a low-calorie ice cream if it has a strange aftertaste.

Nutrition Compared With Traditional Ice Cream

Halo Top is often compared with premium higher fat and super creamy pint-size products. However, its also important to compare it with regular ice cream.

Heres how vanilla-flavored Halo Top stacks up against regular and premium vanilla ice cream, per 1/2-cup serving (

15% of the DV

*This includes lactose the natural sugar in milk as well as added sugars.

As shown above, Halo Top ice cream contains about half the calories of regular ice cream and less than a third of the calories of premium ice cream. This is because its lower in fat and sugar.

Additionally, a 1/2-cup serving of Halo Top has 5 grams of protein, or 10% of the Daily Value . Though modest, this is more than twice the amount of protein in regular ice cream.

From a vitamin and mineral standpoint, the main contribution of any ice cream is calcium, which is important for strong bones. Still, one serving of Halo Top contains only 10% of the DV for calcium, while a 1-cup serving of milk has 21% of the DV .

OK, Im just going to say right up front that as a nutritionist, I would never categorize ice cream as health food per se. Lift the gold lid of a tub of Halo Top ice cream and you will be greeted with a cheery message printed on the seal, such as Save the bowl, Stop when you hit the bottom or Guilt-free zone.

The slogans encapsulate the promise that has earned the low-calorie, high-protein ice cream a legion of fans since it was created by Justin Woolverton as an experiment in his Los Angeles kitchen in 2011.

Halo Top offers the indulgence of premium ice cream but with much less of the sugar and fat contained in traditional brands such as Ben & Jerrys or Häagen-Dazs. A 473ml tub of Halo Tops Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough will set you back 360 calories, compared with 1,120 for the Ben & Jerrys equivalent.

Halo Tops simple proposition, paired with the online marketing savvy of Woolverton, 39, and his business partner Douglas Bouton, 33, has won over calorie-counting consumers. In barely six years, Halo Top has become North Americas sixth-biggest ice cream brand, with a 3.7 per cent market share in 2018, according to Euromonitor data. The private company does not disclose financial information, but its co-founders say it has about 120 employees, and is profitable and growing rapidly.

Woolverton and Bouton have retained majority control after declining several takeover offers and raising $1.5m from a combination of friends and family, angel investors and crowdfunding.

NadaMoo! is another ice cream alternative made with coconut milk and water inulin, a prebiotic fiber linked to digestive health and agave. A pint contains about 20 grams of fiber. Some flavors are cleaner than others in terms of the ingredients, and calories vary considerably, ranging from 240 in a pint of vanilla to 600 in a pint of chocolate peanut butter. But in my opinion, the coconut milk base in NadaMoo! creates a richness that makes a half-cup portion feel just right.
