Right now you can find Impossible Burgers at more than 5,000 participating restaurants across the country. To identify the location nearest you, check this map tool on the Impossible website. White Castle currently offers Impossible Sliders for $2 a pop and Burger King also plans to offer Impossible Whoppers at its some 7,300 franchises before the end of the year, CNN reports.

The good news for curious home chefs: Impossible Foods also plans to sell the patties at grocery stores starting this year. While the company has not confirmed an official launch date or retail partners yet, look for more details coming out soon.

    Plant-based meats may not be an entirely new trend but, thanks to advancements in food science and a growing desire to eat more sustainably grown foods, they are easier to find and more enjoyable than ever before.

    This is especially true when it comes to burgers. Companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat have developed products that taste and even bleed like beef burgers. Restaurants have, in recent years, begun serving up hybrids that mix meat and mushrooms such as the Blended Burger, which are also tickling the taste buds of adventurous eaters everywhere.

    But how do these plant-based and veggie-enhanced alternatives stack up against classic beef? Curious Plot advisory board member, registered dietitian and founder of AgriNutrition Edge, sat down with us to share some insights on the alternative meat scene.

    Q: What do you think is driving the growth of plant-based meats?

    Research from the Hartman Group suggests a few consumer trends at play here. The first is that protein is hot right now. Keto diets that are high in fat and protein are trending due to reported short term weight loss.     Although beef burgers can be pretty darn delicious, they’re generally pretty low in fiber. If you’re eating red meat regularly this can, unfortunately, become pretty apparent through symptoms like constipation .

    With diets higher in fiber helping to promote regular bowel movements and prevent constipation, as well as being associated with a lower risk of heart disease, according to The Nutrition Source, you’ll be pleased to know that Impossible meat has a pretty great fiber content. Yes, eating it often means you’ll be getting a good dose of what you need to keep you regular.

    A 4-ounce Impossible Burger has 3 grams of fiber per serving, whereas a 4-ounce lean beef patty has 0 grams of fiber. With the recommended total dietary fiber intake being 25 to 30 grams from food sources, according to UCSF Health, that’s about 11 percent of your daily intake in just one meatless burger. Not bad!

    However, if you really like the taste of Impossible Burgers and want to order that instead, that’s okay too. Just try to choose more wholesome, less processed foods as much as possible, London recommends.

    Is The Impossible Whopper Vegetarian Or Vegan

    Is the Impossible Burger Healthy?

    Vegetarian? Yes. Vegan? No. Totally friendly to all plant-based eaters? No again.

    The Impossible Whopper, served as-is on the menu, cannot be vegan because the burger is topped with mayonnaise, which is made with eggs. Many vegetarians, however, do eat eggs and dairy products, so you could classify the burger as vegetarian.

    Either way, the burger as a whole may not be entirely friendly for vegans or vegetarians.

    The Amount Of Saturated Fat Is Comparable To Beef

    Coconut oil is another main ingredient in both Beyond and Impossible products.Michele Sidorenkov, a Phoenix-based registered dietitian nutritionist and trained chef, said coconut oil is high in saturated fat but is commonly thought of as a healthful fat.

    While there might be some public support for coconut oils health benefits, the overall body of research and research-based recommendations say to limit coconut oil, and coconut oil fats are not as healthy as other plant-based, unsaturated oils, like olive oil or canola, Sidorenkov said.

    In fact, the American Heart Association issued an advisory against consuming coconut oil, saying it is 82% saturated fat, which can raise LDL, or bad, cholesterol similar to the way butter and beef fat do.

    The addition of coconut oil gives Beyond and Impossible burgers comparable saturated fat levels to beef: Beyond has 6 grams, Impossible 8 grams and beef 7.6 grams.

    Among traditional veggie burgers, Morningstar Farms has 0.5 gram of saturated fat, Gardenburger 1.5 grams and Boca 1 gram.

    When it comes to calories, beef, Beyond and Impossible burgers are about the same. Uncooked ground beef has about 255 calories per 100 grams, while Beyond patties have 250 calories and Impossible 240.

    The traditional veggie burgers range from 100 to 110 calories.

    Are Burgers Good For Muscle Growth

    Well, if you look at the fiber content, for example, yes, to see any fiber in a burger is a good thing. But compare that to a whole food If you ate the same amount of protein from yellow peas, thered be almost no saturated fat and sodium and a whopping 20 grams of fiber.

    So yes, processing plants can eliminate 90 percent of the fiber but processing plants through animals eliminate 100 percent of the fiber.

    Dr. Greger concluded that while dietary guidelines should continue to emphasize a diet rich in plant-based foods such as nuts, seeds, and legumes, but when it comes to opting for Impossible Burger over beef: its a no brainer.

    The share price for Beyond Meat, the company behind the Beyond Burger, increased 600 percent in the six weeks following the companys initial public offering in spring 2019, according to Bloomberg. The price has bounced around during its first year and is now trading at about $126 per share, compared with around $235 at the peak, according to .

    The coronavirus has also been good for the plant-based meat business. According to Bloomberg, the coronavirus lockdown created a 264 percent jump in sales for the faux-meat category, likely due in part to people stocking up before quarantine, as well as shortages of meats like pork and beef.

    And while Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are the two best-known brands, others like Tyson Foods, Nestlé Sweet Earth, Before the Butcher, Moving Mountains, and Hormel Foods are trying to get a piece of the meat-free market, too, according to Nations Restaurant News.

    You Won’t Lack Iron When Eating Impossible Meat Daily

    When you think of iron, you may think of juicy, rare, red meat. The thought of replacing a well-known source of iron with a non-meat substitute might have you wondering how much iron you’ll be missing out on. Interestingly, though, Impossible Burgers are actually higher in iron, gram by gram, than regular beef. According to Good Housekeepings side-by-side nutritional analysis of a 4-ounce Impossible Burger and a 4-ounce regular beef patty, the non-meat version provided 25 percent of your recommended daily iron intake compared to beef’s 17 percent.

    In 2009, Stanfordbiochemistry professor Patrick O. Brown spent an 18-month sabbatical investigating how to eliminate intensive animal farming, which he determined at the time to be the world’s largest environmental problem. With other academics, Brown co-organized a conference in 2010 in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness. However, the National Research Council workshop “The Role of Animal Agriculture in a Sustainable 21st Century Global Food System” had minimal impact, and Brown decided soon after that the best way to reduce animal agriculture was to offer a competing product on the free market.

The plant-based burger has more protein, less total fat, no cholesterol, and less food energy than a similar-sized hamburger patty made with beef. It contains more sodium and more saturated fats than an unseasoned beef patty. The Impossible Burger received Kosher certification in May 2018 and Halal certification in December 2018.

    As anticipated, several articles on the health implications of consuming soy via the Impossible burger have been written. Unfortunately, some of the same misinformation that has plagued soy for 20 years is being repeated. Case in point, one recent article concluded: We believe that consumers should be aware that soy based products are not health foods due to their sex hormone disrupting activity, as well as the well documented presence of phyic acid , trypsin inhibitors, goitrogens, etc along with other comments about the dangers of soy. However, the argument put forth by the authors is based on outdated and cherry-picked information.

    That 19 g of protein provided by the Impossibleä Burger is comparable to the amount of protein in a beef burger. It also makes quite a significant contribution to meeting the protein RDA, which for a man is about 60 g or so. But it is a lot less than the amount suggested by the author.
