How Much Protein Is In A Cup Of Milk

Milk is a good , with 8 grams in a cupor about 1 gram of protein per ounce.

This is true whether you choose fat-free, low-fat, lactose-free or whole milk. Each contain high-quality protein, which means they provide all the essential amino acids your body cant make on its own.

Milk contains two types of protein: casein and whey. Both occur naturally in milk, and the powder form of whey can be mixed in with other foods to boost protein content.

Whey is considered a fast protein because it is digested faster so it releases amino acids to the muscle more quickly than casein does. That might be why so many athletes choose chocolate milk as a recovery drink!

Casein has its place too, however. Some scientists think taking it before bed helps maximize the repair and rebuilding of our muscles as we sleep, because it is digested slower and releases amino acids at a slower rate over time than whey.

No matter when you have it, protein helps bodies rebuild and maintain tissues like those in our muscular and nervous systems. When we get enough protein throughout the day, we likely dont need to rely much on our bodys stores.

Research shows getting 10 to 15 grams of essential amino acids per meal, including 2 to 3 grams of leucine, which is also found in milk, can help rebuild muscle.

Can I Drink Milk Instead Of Whey Protein

This can be explained by a very simple reason. Were suggesting you add milk after exercising instead of whey protein. That way, 30 grams of protein are taken from whey protein instead of leaving it all in protein powder. About 8-10 grams of protein can now be found in the fluid. Your whey proteins protein level can be higher than you had originally thought since thats what they wanted.

Whey Protein Vs Chocolate Milk

I have recently got into a pretty heated debate with a student from my colleges exercise science program. He claims that according to his programs main professor, whey protein is a total waste of money and can be easily replaced by chocolate milk. He claims that although milk contains little protein the amino acid content offers more advantages than whey. I say this is total crap, as many conflicting opinions as there are in the field of nutrition and exercise whey protein is as close to a fully accepted thing as I have ever seen, nearly everyone says it is the most important part of gaining quality mass. I know aminos are important but I also supplement with them. Anyone know if there is any truth to these claims about chocolate milk?

Is Chocolate Milk A Good Post

Nestle Nesquik Nestle Protein Power Chocolate Milk, Pack of 12 Ready ...

Ever thought about drinking chocolate milk after a hard workout? It may be more beneficial than you think. Dr. Charles Smith, UAMS family medicine doctor, said that some new research seems to suggest chocolate milk as good post workout drink.

Recent studies have shown that drinking chocolate milk after exercising is advantageous because of its protein content. Every cup of chocolate milk contains between eight and 11 grams of protein. Experts say that ideally you will want to consume between 15g and 25g of protein after a workout, which equals between 500ml and 750ml of chocolate milk.

Compared to plain milk, water or most sports drinks, it contains double the carbohydrate content, ideal for tired muscles. Its high water content replaces fluids lost from sweating and assists in preventing dehydration. In addition, it gives the body calcium, vitamin D, sodium and sugar, which help you retain water and regain energy. Milk also contains key nutrients that sports drinks cannot match.

UAMS Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, who is certified in treating sports injuries, said that he would tell his athletes about the study. I would have them give it a trial if they wish. In addition, I would recommend consultation with a sports nutritionist. He said though that generally for exercise under an hour, water is all that is needed.

The calcium in milk is said to be highly absorbable, compared to calcium in vegetables, legumes, and many other non-dairy sources.

    Why Is Protein Necessary

You can get plenty of protein from actual food.

Protein is great to eat right after any type of workout because the amino acids help your muscles repair themselves. All exercises, from running marathons to weightlifting, create small microtears in your muscles. After you stop working out, your body sends blood and nutrients to heal the site this is how muscles get stronger. Its also why post-exercise fuel is vitally important.

However, proteins role in this process may be slightly overstated. Many researchers say that we consume twice as much protein as we really should the average adult woman only needs about 55 grams per day, and men need 65 grams. A single serving of protein powder has around 20 to 25 grams of protein, which is a bit of overkill for most people, considering youre also likely getting protein from your meals.

Chocolate milk is basically milk flavored with cocoa and sugar. The Dairy Council of California notes that all flavored varieties of milk, including chocolate milk, have the same nutrition as regular milk. According to the Dairy Council of California, chocolate milk offers the same amount of protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamins A, B and D as regular milk.

Of these, calcium is a key nutrient that is usually obtained from milk and milk products. According to the USDA, there are 401 milligrams of calcium in 1 cup of chocolate milk, although the exact amount of calcium in your chocolate milk could vary slightly depending on the brand.

The National Institutes of Health recommends a calcium intake between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams per day for adults, so the calcium in 1 cup of chocolate milk can help you achieve roughly one-third of your daily calcium requirement.

The USDA notes that, apart from calcium, 1 cup of chocolate milk has 149 calories and offers 7.99 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of fat, 24 grams of carbs , 420 milligrams of potassium, 130 milligrams of sodium, 499 milligrams of vitamin A and 101 milligrams of vitamin D.

While the calories in chocolate milk are not empty calories because they also deliver nutrition, chocolate milk gets a bad rap because of its sugar content, which makes it a less healthy option compared to other drinks, like regular milk, for example.

What Else Should Be In A Post

Whats often overlooked in our post-workout recovery equation is carbohydrates. Working out also depletes your bodys glycogen, which is essentially stored energy. Eating carbs replenishes glycogen, and also helps cell maintenance and repair.

So, an optimal post-workout recovery drink would have a good mixture of both carbs and protein, with some electrolytes thrown in. Electrolytes are minerals like calcium, sodium and potassium that keep you hydrated and help balance your bodys pH.

Drinking Too Much And Too Many Calories

It is true with anything we eattoo much is too much. And I mean calories. This goes for flavored milk, also.

Too much of a good thing can be bad for your child. Think about too much fruit and the resulting trips to the bathroom.

Chocolate milk can be part of a healthy and satisfying diet as long as you keep the quantities consumed in check.

Aim for three servings of dairy per day, on average, and be mindful of the portion size and how often you offer it. Dairy can be yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, milk or other dairy product.

Its not a good idea to offer three servings of chocolate milk, so make sure you rotate foods in this category.

What Does The Research Say About Chocolate Milk And Recovery From Running And Endurance Exercise

A study investigating the recovery and performance benefits of chocolate milk in climbers found that chocolate milk reduced muscle soreness when compared to water, and it also led to improved performance, with both a greater distance climbed.

Another study compared the recovery benefits of chocolate milk versus one carbohydrate-replacement drink and one fluid-replacement electrolyte drink and found that chocolate milk was superior to both of the other common commercially-available recovery drinks.

Cyclists completed a glycogen-depleting time trial, then took a four-hour recovery break, and then had to complete another exercise bout to exhaustion at an effort level equivalent to 70% of the power at their maximal oxygen uptake.

Immediately after the first time trial, as well as at 2 hours into the recovery window, the cyclists consumed one of the following recovery drinks: chocolate milk, a carbohydrate-replacement, or a fluid-replacement beverage.

Those that drank chocolate milk cycled 51% and 43% longer than cyclists who drank the carbohydrate- or fluid-replacement beverage and .

These results indicate that chocolate milk helped cyclists bounce back quicker and more thoroughly from the first bout of exercise so that they were able to perform better in the second bout.

To build on these findings, a different study examined the recovery effects of chocolate milk on a molecular and physiological level. In other words, how exactly does chocolate milk enhance exercise recovery?
