The post-workout drink you never knew you needed.
Youve made it your mission to get fit, and youre finally following through on it. Youve got the time, energy and know-how to work out, but theres only one problem youre spending a fortune on protein powder.
Supplements like protein powder are often marketed as necessary for any sort of fitness gains, whether youre trying to lift heavier weights or run a longer distance. But the reality is, theyre not all that necessary for the majority of people. Instead, you can sip on a nice, tasty beverage after your workout thatll give you all the same benefits: chocolate milk. Yup, you heard me right. The treat from your childhood may now be the key to athletic success.
Nesquik Chocolate Lowfat Milk
When you were growing up, there’s a really good chance that Nesquik Chocolate Lowfat Milk was the first chocolate milk you experienced. This stuff has been around for more than 70 years, and everyone has seen Quicky, the smiling cartoon bunny that is Nesquik’s mascot. Back then, you probably loved this drink. However, if you try this chocolate milk today, you’ll be disappointed.
Nesquik Chocolate Lowfat Milk has an overwhelming amount of sweetness. Instead of tasting like chocolate milk, this stuff tastes like sugar milk. Back when you were growing up, getting a sugary drink was a treat. But now that you’re grown up and you’re interested in rich, delicious chocolate milk, you’ll realize that this drink isn’t what you’re looking for.
To make matters worse, Nesquik Chocolate Lowfat Milk has an odd consistency. When it’s in your mouth, you’ll think that tiny grains of sand somehow got into your drink. Pass on this gritty, sugar-laden junk. Sorry, Quicky.

When it comes to the texture of this drink, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. In fact, its texture is as pleasing as any chocolate milk in this ranking.
Tragically, that’s the end of the positive attributes for TruMoo Chocolate Whole Milk. Take a sip of this liquid and it won’t take you long to figure out what is so very wrong. This stuff may look and act like chocolate milk, but it tastes more like water than it does chocolate milk. It’s completely lacking any sort of chocolatey goodness. When it’s in your mouth, you can taste a little bit of chocolate but not nearly enough.
Unless the aspect of chocolate milk you like the least is the chocolate, pick something other than TruMoo Chocolate Whole Milk.

Lower Carbs at Meals, Eat Larger Portions of Protein
Im a big fan of making my meals higher protein, lower carb, by substituting low carb vegetables for typically high-carb side dishes. One of my absolute favorites is making mashed potatoes from cauliflower . Ive had quite a few blog readers comment that they were stunned at how creamy it gets! I also use cauliflower in place of rice . I also love turnip in place of potato as a breakfast hash. This way, the total calories of the meal can stay low, and the serving of protein can be upped.

Is Chocolate Milk Good For Runners
The nutritional needs of runners and other athletes are somewhat different than for the general population. Running burns a lot of calories and requires a higher dietary intake of carbohydrates for vigorous workouts.
Although the higher sugar content in chocolate milk may be unhealthy for sedentary individuals, this is usually less problematic, and potentially even beneficial for endurance athletes and runners.
Much like sports drinks, energy gels, dried fruit, and energy chews provide the easily-digestible carbohydrates runners need before and during exercise, the simple sugars in chocolate milk can be helpful, rather than potentially harmful, to runners.
Nutritionists probably wouldnt recommend drinking sports drinks over water to someone who sits at a desk all day, though sports drinks have their merit for a runner before, during, or after a long run or race.
Similarly, the sugar content in chocolate milk can actually be beneficial to runners as part of the carbohydrate fueling strategy before or after a run.
All this is to say, chocolate milk can be a healthy drink for runners, particularly because it has many health benefits and the downsides of the sugar content are minimized if not negated.
Running is a high-impact activity, so bones are placed under a tremendous amount of repetitive stress. The calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus in chocolate milk can support healthy bones and reduce the risk of stress fractures in runners.

A Good Source Of Nutrition For Kids
The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans indicate that calcium and vitamin D continue to be shortfall nutrients for children.
A review of calcium intake and status in children indicate that up to 50% of children as young as 2 years are not getting enough calcium.
While the optimist in me knows that children can get calcium from other sources, the realist in me thinks differently.
I believe that these shortfall nutrients may create some real health problems for children as they age, particularly in their bone health.
Chocolate milk may help close that gap and helps kids build strong bones.

A Recovery Drink After Sports Training
As I mentioned, chocolate milk has been studied as a workout recovery drink, and from all indications, it has a positive impact on muscle recovery and growth, and helps replenish glycogen stores in muscle tissue.
From soccer players to cyclists, it appears that, when consumed after prolonged exercise, the combination of carbohydrate and protein has positive effects on the bodys ability to recover and rebuild muscle.
Parents of athletes take note: 8-10 oz appears to do the trick.
Thats why I stock it in my home routinely.
