Can Kids Drink Premier Protein

Myth #: All Protein Shakes Are Created Equally

If you really need to rely on a packaged protein drink, there are a few things to look out for. While theres no one-size-fits-all recommendation, Lawrence says its a good idea to look for shakes that are fortified with calcium, iron, and Vitamin D. Limiting added sugars is always good. Jaramillo says Carnation Instant Breakfast is a good option. But, I dont think should be up in a high category of a choice. I think the best option would be to try and provide options for your kids for different foods to eat, keeping stuff more available. Having more foods at the table for them to try, having parents trying different foods so that the kids kind of see the different foods.

Premier Protein Clear Drinks

The wonderful thing about clear liquid protein drinks is that they are easier to drink than their shake counterparts. They are refreshing and hit the spot when you have had a great workout or soccer practice. I keep mine in the fridge and bring it along with me when I work out at the gym. Its an easy way to get more protein in my diet.

Each bottle of Premier Protein CLEAR contains 20g of protein and 0 grams of sugar. I was a little afraid that it would taste chalky or something, but I was pleasantly surprised that it didnt. The taste was pretty good! I am thinking that my son would even like it which would be great because we are constantly looking for ways to increase his protein intake. He is pretty small for his age so we try and fit protein into his diet in as many ways as possible.

A 12 pack of Premier Protein CLEAR is $19.98 and is available right now at Sams Club!

It may seem like adding protein powder to shakes for your kids is a good idea, along with other powered-up beverages like sports drinks and energy drinks. But there are actually several problems with this approach.

There are very few circumstances in which kids need these supplements and drinks. However, if you are concerned about your child’s protein intake or other nutritional needs, talk with your pediatrician.

An underweight 14-year-old may benefit from adding a medically-formulated, prepackaged protein shake to her daily diet. These shakes also contain a carefully regulated balance of vitamins and minerals that the body requires to function at its best. Theyre meant to boost nutrition rather than replace meals and should be used only with a doctors blessing.

Are There Circumstances When Extra Protein Is Needed

The Good and Bad Flavors of Premier Protein Review #mamagetsfit

There are special cases in which a child might need additional dietary protein. But, even then, protein supplements or shakes arent the best options, Schnee says.

Your child may need extra protein if they:

  • Is underweight. Offering a protein shake or supplement may seem like an easy fix, but use caution. You shouldnt give protein drinks to children simply because theyre underweight, Schnee says. Dont use these products without consulting a pediatrician.
  • Is a picky eater. What if your child doesnt like meat or wants to subsist only on pasta or pizza? They might consume less protein than other children, but they likely still meet their nutritional needs, she says.
  • Is vegan/vegetarian. Children who dont eat meat often have lower protein levels. They might need 10-15% more protein intake to get the same benefits as meat-eaters, Schnee says. She suggests peanut butter, beans, oatmeal and certain vegetables, such as peas, broccoli and spinach, as good sources of protein for them.
  • Has a metabolic condition. Children who have conditions that cause protein waste can also benefit from a higher-protein diet, she says.

Remember, real foods not protein supplements are always better for growing bodies, especially after a hard workout.

Which Is The Best Protein For Kids

If you are going to give your kids a protein supplement, whey protein is one of the best options. It is one of the two proteins found in dairy milk, so it is a protein that their body is likely already used to. It is easy to digest compared to other protein powders and can help their immune system along with give them all the nutrients they need.

Casein protein is a bit harder to digest and the amino acids work more slowly, but its another good option. Egg and non-GMO soy protein powders do taste a little different than the milk-derived protein powders, but they offer many of the same health benefits. Pea or brown rice protein may be best for children who have food intolerances or allergies.

Note: If your child is sensitive or allergic to gluten, eggs, nuts, and/or dairy products, make sure to discuss with your physician before making any dietary changes to their routine.

Always make sure to seek immediate care if you notice signs of any severe reaction.

When choosing a whey protein powder, look for ones that are low in added sugar, non-GMO, made with recognizable, whole ingredients, and have been clinically tested or doctor-recommended.

You can feel confident that your child can safely use our whey protein powder as part of their regular diet, without worrying about artificial or harmful ingredients. Plus, they will get all the protein they need to stay healthy.

Myth #: Parents Can Use Protein Shakes To Treat Serious Nutrition Deficiencies

In cases where a childs nutrition deficiencies are more serious, and eating regular meals is a real challenge, protein drinks can serve as one tool for adding calories and nutrients to their diet. But its best to leave that decision up to a professional.

When a kid is on the smaller size, parents might worry that picky eating is to blame. But its only useful to compare a childs growth to their past growth, not their peers. Jaramillo says that picky eating could become serious enough to lead to malnourishment when a kid isnt gaining weight or drops a level in their growth curve. In other words, a kid who steadily remains in the lowest 10th percentile of weights for their age group isnt necessarily unhealthy . Its when a kid drops down a few percentiles that intervention becomes necessary.

At that point there could be other things going on, and we wouldnt want to necessarily just supplement with the protein shake alone. Were going to want to supplement with other interventions also, Jaramillo says. In general if your kids underweight, I think there are things to do to get more food in their diet, says Lawrence, who recommends addressing concerns with a doctor at a childs well visit.

Should Your Child Use Supplements

To help boost your child’s protein intake, look first for ways to help him improve his diet. Protein shakes and other supplements should be used to do exactly that, supplement a diet. Supplements are not designed to be replacements. Real foods provide vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are often missing in engineered foods. Also, protein shakes often deliver less protein than what your child might easily obtain from foods. Protein shakes are convenient, but some carry the risk of chemicals and contaminants that can do more harm than good to your child’s growing body.

Myth #: Most Kids Need More Protein

Premier Protein Clear Protein Drink in Tropical Punch ...

Kids shakes often advertise the grams of protein they offer, with the implication being, the more protein, the better. Not so fast. While protein might be the buzzword du jour, according to Jaramillo, its one of the things that in the American diet we typically actually get in excess. A protein drink can serve as an insurance policy in situations where kids are seriously lacking good nutrition, but most kids need, if anything, more high-quality carbohydrates, fruits, veggies, and whole grains, Jaramillo says.

Risks Of Protein Shakes For Kids

Protein powder is unnecessary for children. While foods with protein are a good idea, extra protein in powder and supplements is rarely needed and can even be harmful.

  • Supplements show no benefit for strength. Strength training offers better outcomes than performance-enhancing supplements.
  • Food offers sufficient protein. The typical American diet already has two or three times the amount of protein we need. So the average child, even an athletic child, already gets plenty of protein in their diet and does not need extra protein.
  • Extra protein can lead to weight gain. Extra protein may be stored as fat and may not lead to extra muscle mass.
  • High protein intake can have health consequences. For some people, high levels of protein intake may lead to dehydration, kidney damage, and increased excretion of calcium, which puts some children at risk for kidney stones.

Giving school-age kids protein powder may also encourage them to continue to use sports supplements later. Many teen athletes use some kind of sports supplement, such as:

  • Protein supplements
  • Beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate
  • Chromium

According to studies, the percentage of young American athletes who use sports supplements could be as low as 21% or as high as 71%.

The AAP strongly discourages the use of performance-enhancing substances for athletic or other purposes.

Summer is still hanging around! You still have time for these refreshing protein drinks with fresh mint and crushed ice!

This post is sponsored by Premier Protein.

All is not lost weatherwise when September rolls around, its still a nice 80 degrees here in Southern California. And even when Im seeing pumpkin spice lattes on chalkboards everywhere, I just kinda want something refreshing and simple to quench my thirst.

These Clear Protein Drinks from Premier Protein are perfect for doing exactly that! With only 90 calories per bottle, zero sugar and no artificial flavors, theyre definitely a better choice to have in my fridge than regular juice which can be loaded with sugar.

Theyre also a handy addition to have as post-workout replenishment with 20 grams of protein in one serving.

Premier Protein might be familiar to you on Foodness Gracious, Ive created other recipes for them, but using their smoothies and shakes, like this Cookies and Cream Coffee Cake and Watermelon and Strawberry Chia Smoothie.

But this post took a little more thought as to what I was going to do with the clear drinks, almost to the point that I was overthinking it.

These drinks dont need to be messed with, theyre already loaded and ready to go, to be enjoyed like theyre supposed to be. Im not a soda drinker but I do like iced tea and after having tea with fresh mint recently I knew that these clear protein drinks would be a great match.

How Much Is Needed

Not as much as many might think. Depending on the activity level, a 14-year-old needs from 45 grams to 85 grams of protein daily. The more active, the more protein needed.

Those numbers may seem high until you consider that a young person will get 22 grams of protein from just 3 ounces of lean meat or poultry, which is about the size of a standard deck of cards. An 8-ounce glass of milk contains 8 grams of protein.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that teens limit their protein intake to about 12 percent of daily calories. They also note that its a nutrient theyre rarely concerned about because teenagers in the United States typically consume about twice the amount of daily protein their bodies require.

Are Protein Powders Healthy For Kids

Premier Protein Health Shake Review – OK for a Mass Produced Product

If youre choosing one of the protein powders on our list, they are absolutely healthy. But whether your child needs a protein supplement should be determined by you and your pediatrician. If you do decide to supplement with a protein powder, choosing one of the options on this list will ensure you are giving your child the healthiest protein source possible.

Note: There is concern thats been raised through research that too much protein is actually unhealthy for kids. An article by Parent Magazine suggests that too much protein is hard on a childs kidneys and liver and can interfere with calcium absorption.

In general, its best to stick to whole foods with kids. It teaches them to enjoy a variety of foods. If a child is eating a well balanced whole food diet with minimally processed foods they are likely getting their needed protein intake for the day. Even if your child is a picky eater they might still be getting protein through sources such as grains, dairy, nut butters, etc.

For some parents who have very picky eaters, it may be necessary to use a meal replacement shake or protein powder until youre able to help your child eat more real fruits and veggies. Or if youre a parent of an older child, a protein powder can be a healthy way to create a filling on-the-go breakfast or snack for your active teenager.
