Can Diabetics Drink Premier Protein Shakes

Protein Throughout The Day

Blood sugar and ketone readings after Premier protein shake, surprising results/ next product test

The American Diabetes Association advise people with diabetes to space their meals out during the day and not to skip meals or to eat too much.

The body can only absorb and use so much protein at one time. It uses what it can and then creates waste with the leftover.

Instead of having 50 g of protein in one meal, for example, it is better to spread that 50 g out into three to four meals containing 15-20 g each.

A protein shake with added oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit could make a meal.

It is also important to vary your sources of protein.

Protein shakes can act as a protein supplement, but it is still important to eat a variety of protein foods, such as meat, fish, dairy produce, nuts, and beans, as these provide other essential nutrients.

There are different types of protein shake. Some you can make from a protein powder, while others come ready to drink.

Both of these can contain sugar, artificial sweeteners, and unnecessary chemicals.

People with diabetes should take care to limit sweeteners like sugar, agave, or fruit juice in their shakes.

Although Protein Shakes May Be Safe For Diabetics Still Use Caution

As diabetics we should have frequent checkups and tests conducted. If you are a diabetic and consume high levels of protein daily then kidney tests such as ACR and GFR should be at least every 3 months. ACR and GFR . GFR is a measure of your kidney functions and is performed through a blood test. Your GFR will determine if you have any kidney disease and what stage. ACR is a urine test to see how much albumin is in your urine. Too much albumin in your urine is an early sign of kidney damage.

Like any other food or dietary supplement, moderation is key. Consuming more than 200 grams of protein each day can exceed the livers ability to turn excess nitrogen to urea. This can lead to nausea, diarrhea, and other adverse side effects in some individuals. As a diabetic it makes no sense to put your body under the unnecessary strain of processing extremely high amounts of protein or any other supplement for that matter. Although protein powder may be safe for diabetics, dont over do it. You can still grow muscle with a moderate protein intake. Also be sure to take breaks from consuming protein powder. Its always a good idea to cleanse your body of processed foods and chemicals from time to time.

When Should You Drink A Ready

“Following a heavy workout, it is important to get in an adequate amount of protein and carbs for sufficient recovery in a timely manner. This means consuming around 15 to 30 grams of protein, depending on individual factors, within 30 to 60 minutes after you’ve completed the exercise. A protein shake can be a lot more convenient and nutritionally balanced compared with other foods,” says Moskovitz.

Powder Versus Ready To Drink Shakes

As a general rule, protein shakes come in two forms. Many people choose to buy the powder and mix the shakes themselves. Doing so gives you much more control over the flavor and texture of the drink.

  • For example, many people make smoothies using protein powder, often adding ingredients like berries, milk and ice. This is commonly done with the products from Shakeology, along with ones from IdealShape and pretty much any other brand out there.

The flexibility that comes with protein powder is great but it isnt effective for all situations.

In particular, it doesnt work well if youre looking for something to eat on the go, such as after a run. Likewise, many people prefer portable options if they tend to be running late, especially first thing in the morning.

Ready-to-drink options provide a way around this, if you choose wisely. For example:

  • Many ready-to-drink shakes are fairly high in sugar and often have hardly any protein as well.
  • Such brands often use manipulative marketing to make the products sound much healthier than they actually are.
  • Brands like Boost have more than 20 grams of sugar in some of their bottles . Yet, they’re commonly recommended.

Even the best ready-to-drink options have to rely on extra additives because the product needs to be shelf-stable outside of a fridge.

These aspects mean that ready-to-drink protein shakes are never going to be as good for you as relying on the right protein powder.

Can Premier Protein Be Used As A Meal Replacement

Pin on Bariatric Life

In short, the answer is no. Protein shakes are often confused as meal replacements due to the high amount of protein they contain, but this misconception can lead to negative results in the long run.

If you are looking for a meal replacement which is intended to fully substitute a healthy meal, you are probably doing so for the following purposes:

  • To reduce weight in a healthy manner
  • To maintain your present weight

It is safe to say that a protein shake cannot perform the above tasks as efficiently as you would believe them to, simply because they are not designed for this reason.

Let us look at some of the reasons protein shakes are used and how they fall short of being a meal replacement.

Why Use Diabetic Shakes

Often times, the foods that are easiest to purchase and consume on the go are the least healthy. Fast food is high in saturated fats and sodium, both of which experts caution against consuming too much. Snacks from vending machines may also contain excess fat and sodium as well as sugar, making them less than ideal for diabetics. Diabetic shakes are every bit as convenient as these other readily available foods, as they can be enjoyed quickly anytime, anywhere. The shakes are formulated to supply a complete array of nutrients and the calories needed to supply the body with fuel for energy. This can make them a good alternative to hitting the vending machine or the drive-thru when you’re short on time.

Premier Protein Drink Taste

With my first Premier Protein Drink experience, I noticed it had a dark chocolate taste, one of my best tastes ever.

The chocolate shake is also made of cocoa powder, which makes up that delicious chocolate taste.

Cocoa constitutes polyphenols, one of the best minerals that can even lower blood pressure and act as an antioxidant. Not saying premier protein will lower blood pressure. But its useful to know that cocoa powder has the potential.

In addition, I love coffee. As mentioned earlier, I love the kick a cup of coffee gives me.

Premier protein also comes in caffe latte flavor.

The cafe latte flavor is great if youre feeling a bit sluggish in the morning and need that caffeine boost. It also tastes just like a coffee latte. Yumm.

There is a host of other flavors like strawberries and cream and caramel.

Browsing other reviews online, the majority of people love the taste.

As you can see, while the GI of the Glucerna shake is low there are many ingredients in the shake which are highly processed. I personally prefer drinks that have more real food ingredients. Another issue is that the macronutrient profile is skewed in favour of protein and fats, and its very low in carbohydrates.

Muscle Milk Protein Smoothie

Don’t be fooled by our favorite word “smoothie.” Although protein powders and smoothies go together rather nicely, we’re only talking about the homemade versions which use real yogurt. Muscle Milk claims to use Greek yogurt, but they also note that the drink is heat-treated after culturing, which kills off any live cultures that may have had probiotic benefits.

Dr Bergs Meal Replacement Shake With Mcts & Bcaas

Here is a shake in a 1,55-pound box and chocolate brownie flavour without any percentage of added sugar. The creator of this shake is Dr Berg, and the product is taking his name. He created the whole line of product to help people lose weight while taking in all ingredients that the body needs to function properly.

This is a shake that fits best with keto nutrition. It is a replacement for keto meal. The box includes scoop which is equal to the 26g of powder. Each serving provides you 105 calories, 11g of pure protein, 6,1g of dietary fibre and a certain number of phosphorus, chloride, sodium, potassium, fats, and carbs. There is 2,6g of sugar in the powder, which is not a big number, but yet it doesnt make it the best protein powder for diabetics. Although there is a bit of sugar in the powder, diabetics can use it, but should properly dose it or consult with a nutritionist.

This shake has a great taste, and everyone likes it. The best part is that it helps you to build muscles, and increases the level of energy. The powder contains BCAAs so your body will recover fast after training, and have all amino acids that need.

There is 4g of MCTs that comes from coconut oil and turn into ketones which help you burn fats faster.

When it comes to the price, the product is quite expensive. Consumers are happy with the supplement, but it will work only if you use it with the keto diet. Otherwise, you are not going to achieve the goal you want.

Protein For Weight Loss

Healthier Unicorn Frappe Recipe with Premier Protein

Type 2 diabetes often occurs alongside excess weight and obesity. A person with diabetes may be seeking to lose weight.

Some people introduce more protein into their diet as part of a weight-loss diet.

Since protein takes longer to digest than carbohydrates, it increases the feeling of being full, known as satiety. The person will not feel hungry so quickly after consuming protein.

Adding protein to the diet may help a person lose weight, as long as they use the protein to replace carbs and fats. Adding protein to an existing high-carb, high-fat diet will not lead to weight loss.

Protein should not replace fresh fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain foods, as these provide fiber. Reducing fiber intake can lead to a number of health problems.

Combining protein foods including shakes with high-fiber ingredients can help people with diabetes maintain a healthy weight.

The Effects Of Protein Powder On The Blood Sugar

Most protein powders contain a maximum of 12 grams of carbohydrates per serving which can be considered as pretty low carb. Other powders such as mass gainers will contain from 30 grams of carbs upwards going as high as 120 grams per serving. Mass gainer protein powders will usually require a significant amount of insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. The higher the number of carbs the higher the risk of having a high blood sugar. The protein shake I currently use is Nitro Tech Whey Gold by Muscle Tech which contains 2 grams of carbs. 2 to 12 grams of carbs should not increase your blood sugar levels by a significant amount. For me 12 grams would raise my blood sugar by approximately 2 mmol/L. However, Ive realised that with some protein powders my blood sugar would spike although it contains relatively low carbs. Sometime I could go from 7 mmol/L to 12 or even 14 mmol/L which is insane.

After doing much research and consulting with my doctor, Ive discovered that certain amino acids in the whey protein powder specifically glucogenic amino acids, can be converted into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. This glucose can then increase your blood sugar level if not accounted for. On the flip side, I have used plant based protein powders and they did not have the same effect on my blood sugar level. This may be due to the lack of glucogenic amino acids and high amounts od ketogenic amino acids in this type of powder contains.

Protein Drinks For Diabetics

Some protein shakes specifically designed for people with diabetes contain fiber and resistant starch, a starch naturally found in foods such as beans that your body cannot digest. The fiber and resistant starch usually maltodextrin in the ingredient list in the shakes aid in blood sugar control. Protein, carb and calorie content in these shakes vary depending on brand, ranging from 10 to 16 grams of protein, 6 to 27 grams of carbs and 180 to 200 calories.

Should You Rely On Premier Protein Shakes

Are Protein Shakes Good for Diabetics? Can a Diabetic Drink Protein Shakes? Shake for Diabetes Facts

As a ready-to-drink meal replacement shake, Premier Protein certainly has some merits. The shakes have more protein than most other similar products. At the same time, some of the protein is in the form of whey protein and there is no soy protein present.

The shakes also come in a variety of flavors and are very low in terms of sugar.

But, it isnt all good news. For one thing, the shakes are heavily processed and include arange of artificial ingredients, including artificial sweeteners. The implications of this really depend on who you are and specifically what you need.

Realistically, relying on whey protein powder or something similar and making your own shakes is always going to be a better option. For that matter, focusing on whole food and a healthy lifestyle is more powerful still.

For example, many people rely on approaches like Paleo, low carb, ketosis or intermittent fasting to lose weight and stay healthy. Such options are extremely powerful, especially when you figure out an approach that works with who you are and your relationship with food.

That being said, there are some situations where having a ready-to-drink shake might be extremely useful, especially as these are high in protein and low in sugar.

If that is the case for you, then the Premier Protein shakes are certainly an appealing choice. Realistically, they are better than most other ready-to-drink shakes in terms of nutrition and this alone may be a reason to try them.
