Worried About Cholesterol In Protein Powder
The best low cholesterol protein powder is egg white protein powder. If you are older than 25, this may be confusing as you probably remember being told to eat fewer eggs. Eggs, because they are naturally high in dietary cholesterol, were thought to increase the risk of heart disease.;
Fortunately for egg-lovers, a thorough review of existing research shows that dietary cholesterol has a negligible effect on blood cholesterol levels. While the evidence is not clear enough to say there is no association between dietary cholesterol and heart disease, it is also not strong enough to justify previous recommendations to limit egg intake.;
Moreover, this controversy has little to nothing to do with egg whites. Of the 180-190 mg of cholesterol found in a large egg, all of it comes from the yolk. In fact, egg whites are nearly fat free, containing only one percent of the eggs fat. They also contain about 57 percent of the eggs protein. This is why most egg protein powder is made from egg whites.;
The main ingredient in Drink Wholesome is egg whites. It is therefore no surprise that our protein powders are cholesterol free.;
What makes Drink Wholesome the best cholesterol free protein powder?;
Drink Wholesome is the only protein powder made with 100% real foods. Our chocolate protein powder, for example, is made with egg whites, coconut, cocoa, and monk fruit. Real food ingredients like these are better for you and better tasting.;
*Natural flavors are NOT natural.
They May Contain Added Sugar Calories Or Even Toxic Chemicals
Adding protein powder to a glass of milk or a smoothie may seem like a simple way to boost your health. After, all, protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle, bone strength, and numerous body functions. And many older adults don’t consume enough protein because of a reduced appetite.
But be careful: a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder can harbor health risks. “I don’t recommend using protein powders except in a few instances, and only with supervision,” says registered dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Powder Versus Ready To Drink Shakes
As a general rule, protein shakes come in two forms. Many people choose to buy the powder and mix the shakes themselves. Doing so gives you much more control over the flavor and texture of the drink.
- For example, many people make smoothies using protein powder, often adding ingredients like berries, milk and ice. This is commonly done with the products from Shakeology, along with ones from IdealShape and pretty much any other brand out there.
The flexibility that comes with protein powder is great but it isnt effective for all situations.
In particular, it doesnt work well if youre looking for something to eat on the go, such as after a run. Likewise, many people prefer portable options if they tend to be running late, especially first thing in the morning.
Ready-to-drink options provide a way around this, if you choose wisely. For example:;
- Many ready-to-drink shakes are fairly high in sugar and often have hardly any protein as well.
- Such brands often use manipulative marketing to make the products sound much healthier than they actually are.
- Brands like Boost have more than 20 grams of sugar in some of their bottles . Yet, they’re commonly recommended.
Even the best ready-to-drink options have to rely on extra additives because the product needs to be shelf-stable outside of a fridge.
These aspects mean that ready-to-drink protein shakes are never going to be as good for you as relying on the right protein powder.

Issues With Premier Protein
Processing and artificial ingredients are a major area of concern with Premier Protein shakes. This is a key reason why the Fooducate site rates it as a D, which is their lowest possible score.
You can also see this just from looking at the size of the ingredients list.
Nevertheless, there are some important things to note.
First, this is a meal replacement shake. As a result, many of the ingredients are there specifically to add in nutrients, like pyridoxine hydrochloride for vitamin B6. That same pattern is present for meal replacement powders as well, and many of those have long ingredient lists as well.
Second, this type of product also faces some unique challenges.
After all, the company has to produce a milk-containing drink that tastes relatively decent, has a long shelf life and can be stored out of the fridge.
Theres no way they could achieve that without relying on some artificial ingredients.
Still, those ingredients arent going to be appealing to everybody. Instead, many people want to avoid these entirely if possible. There are also some specific ingredients that are questionable.
One is the use of artificial sweeteners. This isnt extremely unusual and some other meal replacement shakes do use artificial sweeteners. IdealShape is one example of a similar approach.
None of these options are great for health.
The truth is that the long-term studies simply havent been done on artificial sweeteners, so we dont know.

Why Such High Calories
One thing to be aware of is that protein shakes can be higher in calories. On average, the shakes you see below are 200 calories per serving. Because of this, they are best for those who are reducing calories in other areas of their diet or who have a solid and consistent exercise routine. Ideally you should drink this within two hours of exercising.
My protein shakes do keep the calorie count to a minimum and use fresh ingredients such as fruit to boost the nutritional content. In terms of a healthy lifestyle, 200 calories still makes an ideal snack between meals but it is higher than your typical 100 calorie snack so just be aware that the extra protein requires a tradeoff in calories.
