Are Protein Powders Good For You

Protein Shake Mistake #: Beware Of Intolerance

Is Protein Powder Good For You?

A lot of protein powders will contain dairy, soy, corn starch, and additives your body may be unfamiliar with or allergic to. Whey is by far the most popular powdered protein and, if you have an issue with dairy, whey will have all the same problems being as it is, a milk derivative.

Soy protein isolate can be cheaply obtained and can cause inflammation, nausea and skin conditions. Corn starch has a habit of sending your blood sugar into peaks and troughs. Reading the long and complex ingredients list can be tough going but may just save your workout.

Are Protein Shakes Safe

Now that you know what a whey protein shake is, lets talk about the real issue is whey protein safe to consume? Many bodybuilders are raving about the benefits of whey protein shakes.

This is because of how quick and easy it is to get a substantial amount of protein in one simple shake.

All you have to do is, add your whey protein powder and water into a protein shaker and shake! People also ask about why protein powders are so expensive.

Dont worry, we will answer this in the article in the link above! Many mothers even include chocolate-flavored whey protein powder in their childs milk to help him grow faster.

You might have read many articles online that go on and on about the benefits of whey protein. However, none of them address the most fundamental aspect of it: is whey protein safe to consume.

When you hear about the risks it poses, you would not care about its benefits. After all, your health and safety come first. People sometimes confuse BCAAs and creatine with whey protein but it is different.

BCAAs are a special amino acid that lifters use during a workout to keep themselves replenished while training. Creatine is a supplement used to increase performance.

Do You Need A Protein Shake

Not everyone needs the extra protein that a protein shake can add to your diet. But protein shakes can help if you are not getting enough protein in your diet. You might benefit from drinking protein shakes if:

  • You are starting a new workout regime or increasing the time or difficulty of your workout. Youll need that extra protein to build muscle.
  • You are still growing. Teenagers more likely need protein than the average adult.
  • You are recovering from an injury.
  • You eat a vegan or vegan or vegetarian diet. A plant-based protein powder can help you pack more protein into your diet.

Taste Of Plant Protein Powder

The taste of various plant protein powders is up for debate. Some consumers feel that plant proteins taste much better and more natural than diary or other protein supplements. Others feel the exact opposite, strongly disliking the natural taste. Youll have to decide whether the flavor of plant protein is a pro or a con for you!

What Should You Do Instead

Is Whey Protein Powder Good For You

Many Americans think that more protein is better. The recommended daily allowance is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. According to this guideline, someone who weighs 140 pounds should consume roughly 50 grams of protein per day, the equivalent of 6 ounces of lean meat, 5 ounces of nuts, or 20 ounces of tofu. Contrary to common belief, consuming much more than recommended amounts of protein can actually have harmful effects on your bones, kidneys, and liver.

Aside from rare cases, no one needs protein supplements to reach their fitness goals. A diet rich in whole foods like legumes, nuts, and soy products provides plenty of protein to build muscle. By maintaining a well-balanced, nutritious diet, you can live healthily while avoiding the hidden ingredients and contaminants of sports nutrition powders.

Dont Go Overboard With Protein

Whey protein has its place if youre an athlete building muscle or trying to fill some nutritional gaps. But most people already get enough protein and dont need supplements.

Your body can only use 20 to 40 grams of protein at a time, Smith says. Even if youre trying to bulk up, taking amounts higher than this isnt helpful. Most people dont need whey protein to meet their protein requirements if theyre eating a healthy diet.

As with any supplement, its best to discuss with your physician before you start taking protein supplements. They can interfere with some medications or may actually be harmful for people with certain conditions.

Summary: What Should You Do Now

Overall, our approach to choosing the best protein powder glosses over some of the less important considerations like the kind of whey youre using and the different brands and claims being made. This is totally intentional: protein powders are usually more similar than they are different, and there are so many on the market that you could search forever.

Protein powders arent magical muscle-building elixirs and some brands contain worrying chemicals that neednt be included at all. What we recommend is to find a simple, no-frills supplement company that aims to provide you with exactly the basics high-protein, low-sugar, and hopefully fortification with vitamins and minerals. If you can find a protein powder that does all of this with a decent price tag and compliance with good manufacturing practices, then youve found the best protein powder.

The Best Protein Powder for Women and Weightloss (Is It ...

Types Of Protein Powder

There are several different types of protein powder. Whey is the most popular protein supplement and the one that researchers have tended to focus on, but it is not the only one. Common types of protein powder include:

  • Whey: This water-soluble milk protein is popular among athletes. It is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all of the amino acids that the human body requires from food. The body absorbs whey protein quickly and easily.
  • Casein: This type of protein is rich in glutamine, an amino acid that may speed up muscle recovery after exercise. Casein comes from dairy, making it unsuitable for vegans and people with milk allergies. The body digests this protein more slowly, so it may be best to take it at night.
  • Soy: Soy protein is an excellent alternative to whey or casein for people who do not consume dairy. It also contains all the essential amino acids.
  • Pea: Many plant-based protein powders contain pea protein, which is a high-quality alternative to soy- and dairy-based proteins. Pea protein is a good source of the amino acid arginine.
  • Hemp: Hemp seeds are complete proteins that also contain essential fatty acids. This makes hemp an excellent choice for vegans or those with dairy or soy allergies.

Protein shakes vary in price and quality. The United States Food and Drug Administration do not regulate protein powders.

According to a 2018 study, many of the best-selling protein powders contain heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic.

Great Sources Of Dietary Protein

Youll have noticed by now that Im a fan of getting protein from your diet, as opposed to protein powder when at all possible. But to do that, youll need to know what to eat of course.

There are a wide variety of protein-rich foods to choose from, whether you eat meat or not:

  • Lean meat, poultry & fish
  • Eggs and dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese and cream
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Beans and legumes
  • Soy products such as tofu
  • Oats
  • Some vegetables, such as broccoli
  • Specially made high-protein products such as protein bread, protein bars, etc

And of course, when all else fails and youre lacking in protein, but can eat no more, feel free to add a protein shake.

Theres no shortage to choose from even if youre vegan. Simply go for a plant based protein powder such as pea protein as opposed to whey.

Amino Acids And Whey Protein

Whey protein is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. Amino acids are important for many functions in the body, from building muscle to creating new immune cells, says Smith.

Your body makes many amino acids on its own, but not essential amino acids. You have to get essential amino acids through your diet, and consuming whey protein is one way to do that.

But dont discount incomplete proteins. Most plant proteins, like legumes and nuts, dont contain all the essential amino acids. But they have plenty of health benefits. When you eat a variety of incomplete proteins, you get more than enough essential amino acids to meet your bodys needs.

You May Be Forgetting About Whole Food Sources Of Protein

If you are looking for an alternative to whey, soy or egg ...

“Protein powder is a good supplement however, it should not replace whole food protein sources like meats, poultry legumes, and nuts/seeds,” says registered dietitian Alana Kessler, MS, RDN the founder of Be Well by Alana Kessler.

There are some instances of powders containing heavy metals which over time can have a titration effect leading to health problems. BPA and pesticides have also been uncovered in some powders,” Kessler tells us. “Consider the manufacturer and look for chemical-free powders,” she adds.

“A nonprofit group called the Clean Label Project released a report about toxins in protein powders. The researchers evaluated 134 products for 130 types of toxins and found that many protein powders contained heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, bisphenol-A , pesticides, or other contaminants with links to cancer and other health conditions,” says Nieves. According to the report, “some toxins were present in significant quantities. For example, one protein powder contained 25 times the allowed limit of BPA.”
