Common Mistakes That Can Make Protein Shakes Unhealthy
Are protein shakes bad for you? Nonot when you make them from healthy, high-quality ingredients. But as with any food or drink recipe, adding ingredients of poor nutritional value can make protein shakes unhealthy.
Not all protein shakes are created equal. In fact, the term protein shake encompasses a wide range of recipes geared toward numerous different goals. Whether or not a protein shake is healthy or good for you depends on what you put in it, why youre drinking it, and sometimes even when you drink it.
Lets take a look at some common mistakes that can make protein shakes unhealthy.
Weight Loss Drug Dnp Linked To Deaths
One product being sold illegally but still available online, mainly from suppliers based outside the UK, is 2,4-Dinitrophenol .
DNP is an industrial chemical that isnt fit for human consumption. Its highly toxic and causes significant side effects, and has led to at least 3 reported deaths.
DNP is thought to be particularly popular among bodybuilders, who are attracted to its promises of quick-fix rapid weight loss.
Other names for DNP, which comes in a pill or powder form, include:
Using DNP over a long period of time can lead to cataracts and peeling skin, and may cause damage to the heart and nervous system.
Animal studies have suggested DNP may also cause cancer and increase the risk of birth defects.
If you think you have taken DNP, you should seek medical advice immediately.
The Food Standards Agency is working with the police and local authorities to prevent DNP being sold illegally to the public, particularly online.
But many websites offering DNP for sale are based abroad, making this work harder.
Some of these sites offer illegal products alongside legal weight-loss drugs, making it very difficult to tell the difference.

Athletes often use protein bars to recover after an intense workout. Others eat protein bars to help stabilize blood sugar and reduce blood pressure or cholesterol levels. Protein is especially important for menopausal women because it works with calcium to increase bone strength.
Protein is an essential macronutrient everyone needs in their diet. All proteins break down into amino acids. Animal protein sources include meat, eggs and dairy, and plant proteins sources include nuts, beans and lentils. Plant-based proteins are considered to be incomplete proteins because they lack some essential amino acids, but complementary plant-based proteins can be eaten together to form complete proteins. Foods rich in animal proteins also often contain vitamins B12 and D, plus omega-3 fat, heme-iron and zinc. People with high plant-protein diets are at lower risk for heart disease, obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Do Protein Shakes Fill You Up
Protein shakes can either fill you up or just add to your daily nutrition, depending on the type of protein youre using and what you consume it with.
For example, using a protein supplement alongside frozen fruit and a healthy fat source, like peanut butter, could make a smoothie that is much more filling, while using it simply mixed with water isnt so filling but makes a good snack.
The content of protein shakes can vary greatly, so check the label for calorie, fat, and sugar content to help you make a decision.
Those that are higher in calories will be more filling than a low calorie or sugar-free version. You can always increase the calories of your shake by mixing it with milk instead of water.

Are Premier Protein Shakes And Powders Keto Friendly
Premier Protein shakes and powders are keto-friendly. However, the protein shakes with oats and their protein bars contain too many carbs for those following a standard ketogenic diet. Therefore, it’s best to avoid the protein shake with oats and the Premier Protein-protein bars.
For many of you following a keto diet, you’re generally trying to stay between 20 and 50 grams of net carbs per day. Reducing your carbohydrate intake to this level, for most, will allow you to achieve and maintain a state of ketosis, making your body rely on fat for fuel.
Think of your carbohydrates, almost like a budget that you get to spend each day. If you get to spend 50 every day, you have more leeway in what you get to spend it on versus someone who only has 20.
Therefore, when you think of the term keto-friendly, one item may be more keto-friendly for person A and not for person B. Just know that there are no foods that inherently kick you out of ketosis because it’s the total number of carbs you consume and not the food itself.
What Are The Side
A meal replacement is designed to give the body the nutrition a meal would, and hence, it can be used to substitute even two meals a day.
A protein shake like Premier Protein is only intended to give you an energy boost when you exercise. Here is a list of reasons why it is not advisable to use Premier Protein as a meal replacement:
- Protein has calories, so ingesting a lot of protein and not exercising can lead to fat deposits in your body, which is the opposite of your intended goal of losing weight.
- If a protein shake is taken too often, it may lead to high cholesterol and also be a strain on the kidneys.
- Protein shakes can seem like they promote weight loss, but the results are not long term or guaranteed.

Do They Make You Bloated
Protein shakes in general probably wont make you feel bloated, but it might be a side effect of other ingredients in your shake or your diet.
Many high protein products also contain extra fibre to help you feel full, which can cause gas and bloating, so if this is a concern for you, opt for a protein shake without added fibre.
Since protein does slow the digestive process, your stomach may feel fuller than after a meal of pure carbohydrates. If youre feeling bloated, try keeping your shakes simple and add water instead of milk. If you find bloating with one type of protein try soy or another vegan blend instead.
What Makes A Protein Bar Healthy
If you’re looking to further your better-body goals, you may consider eating high protein bars. While it might sound beneficial, unfortunately, most of the protein bars in the market are loaded with sugar alcohols or saturated fat and lack fiber.
Registered dietitian Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CDN, FAND, and owner of Toby Amidor Nutrition tells Eat This, Not That! that they key in selecting a clean and healthy protein bar is to “look for a nice balance of healthy fat, protein, and fiber to help keep you satisfied. Choose a protein bar with between 200 to 400 calories and up to 20 grams of protein per serving.”
It’s not just macronutrients that matter when it comes to determining the best protein bar. Rachel Fine, MS, RD, CSSD, CDN, of To The Pointe Nutrition says ingredients are equally important. “Look at the ingredient list and identify transparent foods like nuts, whole grains, and fruit.”
Angie Asche, MS, RD, CSSD owner of Eleat Sports Nutrition adds that she looks for good sources of protein, “like whey protein isolate, pea protein, brown rice protein, and eggs.”

What Makes A Good Protein Bar
Since the protein bar market is continually changing, Id like to start this post by giving you the tools to evaluate protein to decide whether its a good choice if you have hypoglycemia, diabetes, or just want to live a healthy lifestyle.
Note that I developed these based on the advice of two dieticians.
So those are the boundaries, or tools if you will, to help you select good protein bars. Are you going to find a bar thats going to meet all of these criteria? I can think of only one. But the goal is to get as close to the above as you can.
What Are Protein Shakes
Protein shakes are drinks made by mixing protein powder with water or another liquid, although other ingredients are often added as well.
They can be a convenient addition to your diet, especially when your access to quality high-protein foods is limited.
Although most people dont need protein shakes to meet daily protein requirements, they can be useful if you need to increase your intake or have trouble meeting your needs through food alone.
You can buy protein powder and mix it yourself, or you can get many different brands of premade liquid shakes.
Some of the most popular types of protein powder on the market are:
- Whey protein: quickly absorbed, dairy-based, contains all the essential amino acids (
Certain protein powders and drinks contain a mix of different types of protein.
For example, many plant-based brands combine types to complement amino acid profiles. Some dairy-based protein powders combine whey and casein to provide both immediate and longer-lasting effects on muscle synthesis.
Protein shakes can contain different types of protein, each with their own nutrient profiles and possible benefits.
Protein has been shown to help .
One key reason for this is that protein generally helps you feel satisfied for longer than other macronutrients. This is due in part to the release of satiety hormones GLP-1 and PYY (
